top ten tips from me.
10 - PUTTING A RESERVE ON YOUR AUCTION -this is a no no unless you really really cant risk an item selling for your start price.Reserves are the biggest turn off possible, you may as well throw a tub of treacle on your item !!The psychology is simple - if you see a reserve price your buyers automatically think straight away that they will not be getting a bargain .Most people will just click off to another auction leaving you with a big duck egg zero in your number of bids section.SOLUTION - start your auction at the minimum you want it to sell for.Buyers rarely ask what the reserve price is and often it is quite reasonable however if a buyer cannot see the price then he will move on.Put the amount you are willing to sell for as your first bid and then even if the item gets sniped in last 3 seconds then you are sitting pretty.
9. ALWAYS ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM SELLERS .it gives you a great oppertunity to add to your auction page .eg someone asks you what shade of yellow that lovely tank top you are selling is? you can reply - thanks for your email ! its a lovely hint of jcb yellow and matches perfectly with the purple velvet skirt i also have for sale !!
8. NEVER LOOSE YOUR COOL - you will be asked the same question 50 times even though its written in capital letters in your description, you will sell region 2 dvds and pal games to the usa after stating they only work in the uk.It will happen , be calm and accept it is part of the job.Remember that all there is between you and your buyer is your emails and at all times you must remain an intellegent, diplomatic individual (even if the person you are dealing with is an idiot)
7 EBAYS LAW - dont even try to understand ebays law, it blows your mind.Personally i dont believe douglas adams could define it.what is it? oh sorry ,ill explain.EBAY LAW is the definition of the event which occurs on ebay that you will never sell an item for the same price - you can get £10 for a tin of mommas home made jam one day and the next day sell it for 99p , you can check the times were the same, list on the same day ect but no matter what you do the fluctuations of prices are a law unto themselves .Its a mystery and im not about to go there, just remember to take the good prices with the bad - somedays you will have an unsold item that didnt sell for 50p that you relist and hey presto it sells for £20.00 !! its just one of ebays little quirks and its out of our control. My advise is list items twice in a row if nothing then redo the discription and make it more appealing - if nothing the 3rd time then take it to car boot.I do a car boot every 6 months and sell all the stuff i cant sell for waht i paid for it.
6 - EVERYONES AN EBAYER - in their opinion, most try it thinking its easy and then stop bothering, and everyone has advice for you.The ebay expert is alive and well leaning against a car boot stall, down the wholesalers and at the auctions, hes usually load and proud however never gives you his user id name ''cos he thinks it warrents high security, he could tell you but hed have to kill you, '' actually... the reason he never tells you is because hes worried you might see hes not that big an ebayer and his ''valuble'' advice might not be that valuble after all. we all know someone like that.If you need advice quickly then dont bother with those lot, contact a powerseller, most powersellers are online a lot and most will help if they can. There are many forums on ebay but if you need advice quickly then contact a powerseller whos auctions seem friendly.Ebay is a community and we should all help each other.
5 - TAKE TIME OUT ebay is draining, it is one of the most sapping jobs you can do, buying, listing, invoices, dealing with problems, paypal. I aim to take a week off at least every 3 months, believe me you need it .
4 - PAYPAL - sorry for swearing , you either hate it or hate it .so many issues and problems and a worry to all who use it.Many people buying on ebay worry about sellers scamming them , well... paypal is a hive for buyers to scam sellers. a buyer can buy an item and not opt for insurance and then withing a day or two can file a claim with paypal and get a full refund.Because paypal is such a problem i have listed 5 dos and donts with paypal, if you stick to these tips you will reduce your problems with paypal drastically.1 - do not open an account and straight away have 100s of pounds comming into your account , this triggers alarm bells at paypal and often your account will be frozen. 2 - always get your account varifies and your address confirmed, most people who have problems with paypal have unconfimed and unverified addresses , its easy to get your information confirmed see paypal website for details. 3 - Send items rec delivery over £10 that way scam buyers cannot scam you by claiming not to have recieved items, this is the most common paypal problem and can be eliminated by obtaining a tracking number via rec delivery.4 - Do ring up paypal and tell them of your problems , they will prob not do anything however if everyone complains them eventually they will have to do something.5 - be warey paying for expensive items to unverified sellers , scammers are very often unverified and they can and will claim bankrupcy in which case you can and will be left with nothing and no way to get it back.always check the seller is varified and their address is varified.if not then ask the seller why?
3. ITEMS ARE ONLY WORTH WHAT SOMEONE WILL PAY - you may value it as high as the crown jewels or as low as a bent tack however its the buyers who determine the worth of an item.If something sells for less than you expect then thats life because tomorrow that old beano annual you have been propping your wonky keyboard on may sell for £100 pounds (the annual you bought down the car boot of that ebay expert)
2 - INVEST IN A GOOD CHAIR AND GOOD COMPUTER- if your bums sore and your back aches you wont be able to work properly , you will rush your auctions and loose money, if your computer runs slow you will be having to work twice as long. Invest in a reasonably priced but good computer and a good chair !!
1 - LIFE IS LIKE THAT - the most important advice as regards ebay is that life is like that - accept the rude buyers and sellers - relish in the nice buyers and sellers, help where you can and accept some people you cant help. visualise your old school hall when you had assembly all those people 100s of them some nice some horrible , some shy and some bullys. I have sold to over 6000 people ,imagine 6000 people in a room? some lovely people some total **** , we cant get on with everyone even when we try to , you will get a negative and another and another and although the first is always the hardest to swallow , you must swallow it and accept that you did your best.It is not a sellers fault if he/she did all they could short of cutting his/her legs off and offering them up as a sacrifice. Its just the way people are and never forget that every sale is a person , its easy to forget !! we were all make differently and are unique and sometimes we cant agree .just be all you can be.
