Following its successes with its other silver bullion coins, the Perth Mint in Western Australia have just launched a new silver bullion coin series, featuring the koal bear. Naturally, this is called a silver koala.
We have just received our first delivery, and have been able to photograph these new coins. We trust that most collectors and investors will agree with us, that the concept and the coin design are very attractive.
Theyhave a denomination or face value of $1, and contain one ounce of fine (99.9% pure) silver. They are a very attractive large silver coin. As with other Australian Perth Mint products, each year's silver Koala will have a different design but always featuring a koala.
In our opinion, Perth Mint bullion coins are in general far superior in design and production quality compared with bullion coins issued by most other mints.
Obverse & Reverse of New 2007 Australian Silver Panda One Ounce Bullion Coin
Brief History
The Australian Perth Mint started producing silver Kookaburra bullion coins in 1990, and these are very popular both for their designs, and high production quality.
When introduced in 1990, the 300,000 issue limit of the Kookaburras was oversubscribed by more than five times, and supplies ran out on the first day of issue.
The Chinese Lunar Calendar series is also very popular, and the new silver Koala coin was launched recently at the World Money Fair in Berlin, where we saw it for the first time.
We received our first delivery today, Tuesday February, which we believe is also the official release day!
Currently, there is only one size (weight) available, that is the one ounce size. We believe that the Perth Mint will introduce a full range of other weights later this year, and we will naturally be importing them as soon as they are available.
2007 Koala Design
The design of the 2007 silver koala of all sizes features a koala, of course, perched on a branch. The background appears to be a pseudo-random design, but has the appearance of a hammered or planished finish.
Specifications
One ounce Kookaburras weigh 31.135 grams, are struck in 99.9% pure silver, and contain 1 troy ounce of fine (pure) silver.
Their diameter is 40.6 millimetres.
Issue Limit
We are not aware of any issue limit on the 2007 silver koalas.
