Are you preparing for your DSA driving theory test?
What should you consider before buying any driving test study material?

Preparing for your theory test is essential if you want to become a safe, responsible driver or rider.
If you are a learner driver you must take and pass your theory test before you book your practical test.
So passing your driving theory test is your first step towards being a safe driver on the road.
Theory test fees are expensive, so don’t risk failing in your driving test.

It is important to study the following before you appear for your DSA test -

  • The Highway Code -
The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone. Its rules apply to all road users: drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians as well as horse riders. It contains most up to date advice on road safety and the laws, which apply to all road users.
Latest The Highway Code rules were revised in 2007.
Previous revision was done in 2004. So make sure you are buying the latest version.

  • Traffic signs -
It is important to know road signs and markings that you are most likely to encounter.
Most traffic signs are covered in The Highway Code rules book.

  • Driving theory test questions (multiple choice questions part)
The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part.
If you pass one part and fail the other you'll fail the whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

What should you consider while buying any theory test study material?
    1. Make sure you are buying latest version of the official DSA question set.
You must study latest questions published by DSA from which the exam questions are taken.
Please note DSA may change these questions time to time (mostly once in a year).
It is important that you study from the books having the updated questions.
DSA releases exact set of questions almost every year; you will be asked the same questions in the test.

If you are getting a good deal on ebay for the theory test books/CDs.
Always make sure if the seller is selling the current set of questions.

    2. Make sure you are buying correct set of questions
Theory test questions are different for each vehicle category.
E.g. Car, bike, heavy vehicles, bus etc

    3. Make sure you are buying entire set of the questions.
In your DSA test, you will be asked the questions from the entire DSA theory test question bank.
So you must refer/study entire questions to pass the test. There is no point studying the part of the questions as in a test questions will be chosen randomly from the entire set.

Many sellers sell limited version CDs, always make sure you get 100% official DSA question bank.
  • Hazard perception test -
It is best to practice hazard perception skills on the computer if you have access to one. There are websites and PC-CD ROMs in the market, using which you can practice your hazard perceptions skills. Your driving instructor may be able to help you in understanding this part of the theory test.

Important points to note –

  • Driving theory test questions have been updated in 2008/09
DSA has released new driving theory test questions for the car and motorcycle theory test taken from 1st September 08
  • Number of questions has increased to 50
  • Pass marks -  43 out of 50
  • Time allowed to complete test - 57 mins
  • From 1st April 2008, DSA exam fees increased to £30

We wish you good luck for your driving test.

Be a safe and responsible driver and drive carefully.
