Slotted waste or un-slotted waste? Angled radiator valve or straight? What are standard bath and basin taps sizes? It can all be a bit confusing understanding the jargon related to bathroom fittings,,, believe me I should know as I have had to learn along the way too. Hopefully you will find this guide useful and at least help you feel a bit more knowledgeable about the bathroom fittings you are looking for.
BASIN TAPS- standard fitting size is 1/2 inch
BATH TAPS-standard fitting size is 3/4 inch
BASIN WASTES-- (aka the plug hole and plug)
- standard fitting size = 1 1/4 inches or 32mm -this refers to the thread size of the tail ( the large screw bit at the bottom)
- slotted waste- as shown above these wastes have a hole in and are used with basin that have an overflow hole in them.
- un-slotted waste- have no slots in them and are used with basins that have no overflow
- stay- the pin that holds the plug chain to the basin
BOTTLE TRAPS--(aka the chrome bottle bit under the sink)
- standard fitting size=1 1/4 inches 32mm
- comprise of trap, tube & flange ( flange not shown)
- can be height extendable
BATH WASTES--( the bath plug hole)
- standard fitting size =1 1/2 inch or 40mm
- link the overflow hole to the plug hole
- POP UP or CABLE WASTE -- you turn a knob on the overflow to lift a plug
- STANDARD WASTE- available with a retainer waste or park in waste--ie you can 'park' the plug in the overflow hole
- EXPOSED BATH WASTE- for use with free standing or roll top baths, instead of plasic pipe connecting the overflow to the waste there is a metal chrome pipe.
TOWEL RAIL VALVES
- standard fitting size= 1/2 inch by 15mm
- 1/2 is the connection to the radiator 15mm is the standard pipe size for uk central heating systems
- reducers are available to connect 8mm or 10mm pipe to 15mm valves
- ANGLED VALVES- are used when the water runs at a right angle ie up from the floor and then into the side of the towel rail.
- STRAIGHT VALVES-are used when the water runs in a straight line ie up from the floor in the bottom of the towel rail.
PIPE TAILS- the 15mm chrome pipe to connect the towel rail valve to the floor- used instead of copper pipe .
I hope that this has been of some help... I will continue to add as I get asked more questions but the ones above are the most common questions, so see it's not just you!!!
warmest wishes
Jenny
