Fizzy Bath Bombs

Bath bombs fizz and scent your bath water, they may also contain added moisturisers such as Shea Butter, Mango Butter and Cocoa Butter. They fizz and swirl in your bath tub and release the moisturising oils. Petals, herbs, salts and glitters may be added for decorative purposes. They can be scented with cosmetic fragrance oils or Aromatherapy Essential Oils.

What makes Bath Bombs fizz? - Well here's a little chemistry lesson. The two main ingredients are Sodium Bicarbonate and Citric Acid. When the bath bomb is added to water a reaction occurs between the acid product Citric Acid and the alkaline product Sodium Bicarbonate. This reaction creates a salt called Sodium Citrate. In the course of the reaction, Carbon Dioxide is released. This causes the bubbles you see, much like carbonated soda water, or Alka Seltzers.

Why add other ingredients? - Although Bath Bombs with scent and colour are fun, bath time for many is a time to pamper yourself or relax. By adding various butters and oils which are released during the fizzing action, these can act as moisturisers as they will be left on the skin when you get out of the bath. Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, is often added to bath bombs because it is thought to flush toxins from the body and ease muscle aches. All our bath bombs, both large and small ALWAYS contain added oils and butters. Bath Bomb Bon Bons - With Cocoa Butter

I want bubbles too! - To make bath bombs bubble a foaming agent (surfactant) must be added to the mixture. This is either SLS ( Sodium Lauryl Sulphate), or SLSA (Sodium Lauryl Sulphoacetate). SLSA is milder on the skin than other surfactants and will emulsify any added oils in the bath bomb. All our Bath Bombs contain only the mildest surfactant SLSA, and at low percentages too. I love the petals in my bath, but they block the plug hole! - This is a great tip if you love the idea of decadent bathing in oils and petals but hate cleaning the bath tub afterwards. Just use a sieve to scoop out the majority of the petals before you take out the plug. Simple and easy to do!
