I have recently become a self-appointed mediator. Basically people email me after a bad experience and I do the leg work that Ebay customer services should really be doing but never ever do! I negotate, mediate and can search and identify the real people behind the I.D names so that you can complete the transaction (i.e get your money back, make a return, file a report to the police etc).
This guide tells you about the recent trend of feedback bribery. It also tells you of an unofficial- but very very effective way to get ebay to listen and actually do something about it. Rest assured ebay do have the powers to completely remove a feedback remark and have done so. So be hard, stand firm and insist....
You may be aware that BBC's Watchdog recently (December) featured Ebay after they received a series of complaints from members that they had gone through a transaction, had a bad experience and been left negative feedback. Then what happens is the other member- usually a seller -subsequently leaves untrue and unfair feedback followed instantly by a request to mutually remove the remarks.
Ebay promised to punish harshly any member trying to 'persuade' the removal of feedback. However since this I have received many complaints from members about this happening to them. I'm not aware of any further attempts to prevent this but could be wrong (I rarely am!).
On the latest occasion HAIR_ID a fairly new member believed to be based in Ireland has sold 37 pairs of fake GHD's. Now we've all seen these on TV and been warned how the fake ones damage your hair and can spontaneously combust (if only we could say the same about the sellers of these horrible things).
Well HAIR_ID stands to make thousands from this one venture on ebay, and where is he now? Who knows, fake contact details are a common problem on ebay, and in fairness to ebay I have to admit I can't think of an efficient way to fix this problem, short of ebay phoning everyone every month to check the number is correct!
However what these people often do is follow up your legitimate negative feedback with something equally as horrible or worse, then instantly send you a 'mutual agreement' from ebay to remove the feedback. This is something ebay can do something about.
So you could be the model buyer on ebay, pay quickly, communicate properly, then for being truthful and helpful to other ebayers by leaving feedback warning other buyers, can be left with this situation, to either remove the feedback and therefore leave the trap wide open for other ebayers or make your feedback private too, but if we all did that what would be the point.
What to do?
Keep hassling ebay on this and forward every response that is insufficient to watchdog@bbc.co.uk, make sure you also copy in ebay and send the email so they see you are in touch with the Watchdog programme.
Watchdog will always follow up on a company who doesn't act no their findings.
In the meantime, hassle these people like hell!
Good luck
