Benchmade Mini Skirmish BM 635

 

A Neil Blackwood design featuring the reverse curve interpretation blade style. This is a 3.3 mm thicknesss CPM-S30V stainless steel, asymmetric spear point variation. The false edge continues almost two thirds of the length of the blade, back from the tip.The patented Monolock utilises the titanium liner as a sprung locking phlange with a ball bearing detent which holds the blade in the closed position. The 11.05 mm thick handle is an open design using spindle shaped spacers which helps to reduce weight. The knife is fully dismantlable using torx drivers.

A Mike Snody Design featuring Benchmade's patented 'Axis Lock'. The 3.4 inch long, 154CM stainless steel blade is 3.81 mm thick. This is a hefty knife with cast aluminium bolsters and synthetic handle overlays. Benchmade 670 Apparition

Measures 4.39 inches closed. 3.4 inch long, 3.05 mm thick, Wharncliffe style blade. Blade has a right handed thumb stud, which is removable. The blade steel is 154CM stainless, which is an American made, premium grade stainless steel, originally developed for tough industrial applications. It is known for best all round qualities and offers corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality. There is a 2 inch long false edge on the blade back, which stops short of the blade tip. The last 1 inch of the blade edge leading to the tip is flat ground 3.05 mm thickness to the blade edge. This gives an extremely strong blade tip, while reducing overall weight.

The blade spine cusp has 8 rounded machine ground indentations at the thumb contact point. The handle gives a good four fingered grip, with index finger choil formed by the cast steel bolster. This is a hefty working knife, built to last. The stainless steel pocket clip is attached to the reverse of the bolster with 3 torx screws. The synthetic scales are also attached to liners using 4 torx screws on each side. Blade pivot pin is a torx screw. There is a very secure and precise liner locking mechanism, when the blade is fully open, and no danger whatsoever of accidental closure.

The 'Optimiser' assisted opening mechanism consists of a removable spring bar. The bar is curved and flattened at one end for contact with blade tang, while the other end has an indent which engages with the locking allen screw. The back handle of the knife includes a steel spacer, with an insertion hole for the 'Optimiser' spring bar, and an opposing threaded allen screw hole. One allen key and one torx key are provide with the knife. These are used for removing or inserting the 'Optimiser' retaining screw and adjusting the blade pivot pin tension. I found knife operation was greatly improved with the 'Optimiser' inserted, and the knife is packaged with 'Optimiser' in place and fully operational. The 'Optimiser' works to open the blade automatically after it has been manually opened to 30 degrees. This enhances one handed opening. In addition, because the spring bar engages with the blade tang on closing, it also holds the blade in a closed position. The liner lock on its own, with the 'Optimiser' removed, does not provide an entirely secure closed blade in my opinion. Whereas, the 'Optimiser' holds the blade much more securely closed within the handle. More pictures available in my eBay store

Benchmade 550 Griptilian

Measures 4.62 inches closed. 3.45 inch long, 2.92 mm thick, modified sheepfoot blade. Blade has a 2 cm, oval, bevelled thumb hole pull cut out. The blade spine cusp has 7 rounded machine ground indentations at the thumb contact point. The blade steel is 154CM stainless, which is an American made, premium grade stainless steel, originally developed for tough industrial applications. It is known for best all round qualities and offers corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.

The handle is made of black chequered Zytel with inner stainless steel liners, held together with torx screws. The black coated, stainless pocket clip is side changeable, positioned for tip up carry. As the name suggests, the handle is designed to give maximum grip. The front and back steel liners and zytel handles are ridged in the finger choil area and thumb contact point. The rear end of the zytel handle is also ridged to improve grip. The knife is perfectly balanced, with weight equally distributed either side of the finger choil.

The lightweight and secure 'Axis' lock is easy to operate with either right or left hand. This consists of a movable steel bar, positioned in a slot in the handle liners. The bar has 2 springs attached which maintain a forward tension so that the bar is always in contact with the blade tang. When the blade is fully opened the blade tang is wedged between the 'Axis' bar and the blade stop pin. The 'Axis' lock has to be moved backwards approx 0.5 cm, with the thumb, whilst closing the blade with the index finger. Once the blade has been moved approx 10 degrees from the fully open position, the 'Axis' lock can be released and the blade can be fully closed. When the blade is only a short distance from being fully closed the 'Axis' lock engages a rounded notch in the front of the blade tang and holds the blade closed. Benchmade 551 Griptilian

The 551 Griptilian has a different blade to the 550 Griptilian described above. This is a 3.45 inch long, 2.92 mm thick, modified drop point blade with ambidexterous thumb studs. The same 154CM blade steel is used. This is an excellent blade with the false edge bevel beginning halfway along the blade back and stopping just short of the tip.

Benchmade 555 Mini Griptilian

This is a scaled down version of the Benchmade 550 Griptilian described above. Measures 3.87 inches closed. 2.91 inch long, 2.54 mm thick, modified sheepfoot blade. Blade has a 1.5 cm, oval, bevelled thumb hole pull cut out. The blade spine cusp has 7 rounded machine ground indentations at the thumb contact point. The blade steel is 154CM stainless, which is an American made, premium grade stainless steel, originally developed for tough industrial applications. It is known for best all round qualities and offers corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality. Benchmade 556 Mini Griptilian

This is a scaled down version of the Benchmade 551 Griptilian described above. Measures 3.87 inches closed. 2.91 inch long, 2.54 mm thick, modified drop point blade. Blade has ambidexterous thumb studs. The spine cusp has 5 rounded machine ground indentations at the thumb contact point. The blade steel is 154CM stainless, which is an American made, premium grade stainless steel, originally developed for tough industrial applications. It is known for best all round qualities and offers corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality. This knife has all the benefits of Griptilian Axis lock design in a more compact version
