Ok, so it wasn't quite Dr Who, but it was probably the second most successful British sci-fi series ever. Blake's 7 was an excellent, quite often over-the-top, camp space opera riding on the crest of Star Wars mania.
Set as some point in Earth's distant future, the universe is controlled by the ruthless Federation. Devised by Daleks creator Terry Nation, it featured a band of outlaws on the run from the Federation on board the Liberator and later the Scorpio. Garteh Thomas played the title role, Roj Blake, and leader of the outlaws (for the first two seasons at least). Blake was joined by Vila, a cowardly thief & Jenna , a smuggler in episode 1. They are soon joined by Gan & the extremely smug Avon, played by Paul darrow, perhaps the greatest exponent of "smell the pump school of acting ever. he was so bad & wooden he was totally brilliant. Over the course of season 1 & 2 the crew went through a few personnel changes, this included;
- Zen/Orac/Slave -computers voiced by Peter Tuddenham
- Dayna - Josette Simon
- Tarrant - Steven Pacey
- Cally - Jan Chappell
- Soolin -Glynis Barber
For every good guy & woman there has to be a bad guy or woman & in this case Blake & his motley crew faced the dispicable nemesis that was Servalan (Jacqueline Pearce) & her hench men Travis Mk1-Stephen Greif, Travis Mk2-Brain Croucher ablely supported by section leader Klegg.
A very enjoyable series which lasted 4 seasons (very good for the BBC) & may well be remembered for its scary fashion, wooden acting, dodgy special effects & its incredible finale-view by over 10 million people.
Its also spawned a fair amount of literature, which is, after all why I am writing this guide. so here we go
Novels
- Blakes 7 Sphere books paperback 1977, Arthur Barker also published a hardback version the following year. The paperback is fairly common and can be picked quite easily for a few pounds, the hardback is not as easy to locate and could well set you back £20.
- Project Avalon -Trevor Hoyle, Arrow Books paperback 1978, again quite common and can be bought for a few pounds.
- Scorpio Attack was issued in both paperback & hardback in 1981, written by Trevor Hoyle, the hard back is very scarce. Both published by BBC books, the paperback will cost you no more than £2, even though the hardback is scarce it is still possible to pick up a decent copy for less than £10.
- After Life-Tony Attwood, Target books, paperback 1984
- Avon-A Terrible Aspect, written by Paul Darrow, equally as wooden, was only ever issued in the USA by Citadel Press in 1989 in hardback, follwed 2 years later by a paperback version, published by Carol Paperbacks, again only available in the US. These books are quite scarce & I've seen the hardback sell for £60 & the paperback for about £25.
Non Fiction titles
-
The Programme Guide -Tony Attwood, inc B&W photos from the series, WH Allen, HB 1982, was also issued as a paperback in 1983. The paperback is quite common & can be bought for a few pounds but the hardback is rarer & can cost £20+

Radio Shows
The Radio Adventures -The Sevenfold Crown & The Syndeton 2 CD Box set, two original BBC radio Blake's 7 adventures. Produced and broadcast in the 1990s, and written by ex- Doctor Who producer Barry Letts, The Sevenfold Crown and The Syndeton Experiment reunited many of the original TV cast members
Annuals & Magazines
3 Annuals were issued 1979-1981, published by World Distributors, prices vary wildly depending upon condition but it is possible to pick up a copy for £5
A magazine ran for 23 issues from October 1981 to August 1983, these contained features, comic strips photos etc on the cast & crew and can be picked up for a few pounds.
Marvel also issued 3 specials two Summer Specials 1981 & 1982, plus a Winter Special in 1982, following a similar format to the magazines.
As with any price guide, prices are generally subjective, in this case they are based upon prices I have paid for or sold items for over the last few years. This guide is ment as just that a guide to whats available for the Blakes 7 fan out there. Hopefully it is of use to the good people on Ebay & I would be greatful for any thoughts & comments.
