Bookmark:

A bookmark is a thin marker, commonly made from paper or leather, used to keep one's place in a printed work and so be able to return to it with ease.

Bookthong:

A bookthong is a thin marker, commonly made from beads, cord or ribbon, used to keep one's place in a printed work and so be able to return to it with ease.

History:

Bookmarks date back to the 16th Century, with Queen Elizabeth I being one of the first to use one. At this time, books were extremely rare and expensive, so to try to prevent damage to pages, bookmarks were used to mark pages for future reference.

Since the 1850s, silk and woven bookmarks started to become more popular and designs increased as books became more available. Most bookmarks were used in bible or prayer books.

During the 1880's silk markers became less fashionable and card bookmarkers began to appear in large numbers.

Modern day bookmarks are available in a wide range of materials.

In a world where the computer screen is seemingly taking over from printed paper, the traditional bookmark and it's more fashionably named cousin 'bookthong' still live on and have a place on the worlds coffee table.
