BUYING CANON DSLR - THE COST in UK GBP

If you are reading this, then you are probably either thinking of buying Canon DSLR or and existing owner who lately seems to be spending more and more money on their canon camera, probably on lenses.

I know what your going through .... since I am in the same boat.

Everybody wants to try and get the best for their money and ends up spending far too much money than they had originally bargained for.. the way around this is to consider well in advance how much one is prepared to spend and at the same time think of what use they are going to use their camera for.

The reason for the purchase:

1) If your only purchasing the camera to take general holiday snaps in normal daylight, or simple snaps of the family around your home... please... think about the cost ... for this purpose it is much better so SAVE your money and purchase a Digital Compact Camera.

2) If you want the best out of your photography, are a budding pro, really enjoy taking manual photos, night photos, speed photos, potrait photos, indooor photos and have lots of Money to spend ... then take the EOS 5D, 1Ds MkII route and purchase the required L lenses. NOTE Expect to spend in the region of  £7,500 in total if your thinking along these lines.

3) If you want to experiment a little in manual modes, want to learn how to use a DSLR, take some decent photos, then expect to spend at least £3000 taing the 20D & 30D line.

Here are the typcial requirements in order to achieve a full range of photos on a Canon DSLR:

Note also .. if thinking of upgrading in the future, EF-S lens which fit 20D, 30D & 350D will not fit the 5D, 1D & 1Ds MkII, however EF lenses will fit all these camera bodies.

For a CANON EOS 20D / 30D :

TOTAL COST                                                              £7500                           £4140

*Note also that if one wants to do sports photography or wildlife photography, then very expensive lng prime lenses would be required also .. eg: EF 400 F2.8L @ £5300 ea plus probably an EF 1.4x or 2.0 extender @ £240 ..... increasing the cost by another £5500.

Also most Pro photographers would have an additinal backup camera .. just in case anything went wrong.. just to save the day in addition to a few prime L lenses to shoot at low light.

SO... NOW WHAT IS YOUR CHOICE ?

I think most of us ... if we knew the final cost would have settled for the medium size compact digital !!!

And the rest of us ????

Well... we just become collectors of L glass .. spending ALL our money on lenses just brag that we have EVERY single L lens that canon make .. slighly SAD maybe !
