As with anything you have to start with the basics. To reach a high skill level takes time. But you'll be mixing and scratching in a shorter time than you may think because you now have access to great information and video tips.

As I've told countless people, "DJing is easy when you have the right DJ equipment". Having the right equipment is the best advantage you can have as a DJ.

DJ gear other than real pro gear will only throw your skills and techniques off. Get the right gear the first time. Technics 1200/1210 turntables are industry standard and the top choice for most DJs. I own a pair myself.

Having said that, if your budget won't stretch to direct drive turntables, to learn on belt drive develops skills that benefits you when you do manage to upgrade to a better system. Most DJ's who learn on belts can work on any turntable, however the Blingbling DJ who buys DD turntables will be stuck at that house party in 5 years time whereby the host only has belt drives, and may well make a fool of himself trying to mix in the same manner as DD's. The belt drive DJ will always shine!!
