Buying what appears to be small wedding accessories like wedding cake bags / boxes may not seem very important but with all the excitement of a wedding and with cheap imports appearing every now and again on eBay, it's worth remembering the "basics"...
(1) by their very nature, they will contain food, therefore they must be brand new and in original packaging.
(2) They must be either produced in the EU or licensed under Food Regulations relating to "items coming into contact with food".
(3) Boxes must be suitable for use by Royal Mail, who have strict rules about minimum dimensions etc.
Be extremely wary about buying second-hand cake boxes (NB even if sellers describe as "new", items are still second-hand!)... even if they're in the original packaging, what if the seller is a heavy smoker, keeps dogs (and I'm not being unfair to dog-owners!) or is maybe not as fastidious in their personal hygiene as you or I?... the point is you simply do not know what someone else's home and habits are, so never take the risk where food is concerned!
You wouldn't buy them if you found them lying unwrapped on a shelf in your local newsagents, so why buy from a complete stranger?
British wedding cake bags have traditionally been made from crepe paper and for decades these little bags have been used at weddings but they're now becoming much rare as the cost of making them increases. New cake bags from the USA have started to arrive and with an average price of around 25p, offer really good value.
There are several designs but the best sellers have ribbon ties and are big enough to take a couple of fingers of tradtional wedding cake or one larger finger of sponge cake.
Obviously we sell them but this isn't an advert . . . the main thing is (whoever you buy from) PLEASE always buy BRAND NEW and from a seller with a feedback which proves they know what they are doing. Anything else is just taking a gamble on hygiene and ultimately it's your wedding guests who pay the price.
Thanks! :o)
