Here are my top 5 tips when buying a used Discovery 3
Above and beyond the usual car-buying rules and tips, here are a few for you if you are looking to buy a used Discovery 3.
1. Check out the DISCO3.CO.UK website here you will find the biggest online resource for Discovery 3 owners with a wealth of information ready for you - including more indepth information ready for buying. You just need to ask through the forum and you'll be surprised by the level of knowledge & help.
2. If the vehicle is out of its three year manufacturers warranty check for some of the more common faults such as:
- Worn front lower ball joints (light knocking at low speeds over rough ground. Most evident when suspension raised)
- Uneven wear in tyres (indicates tracking problem but difficult to erradicate altogether)
- Electronic parking brake can have fault. Apply and listen for grinding or screeching. Repeat several times.
- Flat battery (The D3 is heavy on batteries and needs a good condition battery to keep electronics in working order)
- Observe any warnings on the dash - check out with a proper diagnostic if there are any and get cost to repair if necessary.
3. Look for genuine Land Rover accessories - things like rubber mats, seat covers and tow bars are expensive options and finding a vehicle that already has the tow bar you may need will save you money.
4. If you've never driven a D3 get behind the wheel and give it a go. There is a big difference between the auto and manual so try both if you are unsure which to go for. Auto is great all round but the manual offers more control and better driving experience - especially on the road.
5. Beware of the 5-seat version. This will most likely lack air suspension and Terrain Response. These are what many Discovery 3 owners believe make the car what it is and many feel that without these two valuable tools the vehicle is compromised - especially when venturing off-road or when towing.
The Discovery 3 is a very capable and versatile vehicle - it is expensive to run both in terms of maintenance and fuelling. Be aware of this when you buy. There are now many non Land Rover accessories for the Discovery 3 so if you have a special need for off-road, over land or for commercial use so be sure to research all your options.
