Latex moulds can be expensive and it is frustrating when you cast an ornament only to find the latex has split or that the finished item is top heavy and it doesn't stand up.
There are a lot of good quality latex moulds for sale on Ebay, here's what to look for and which to avoid.
When buying a mould make sure the seller has a picture of the finshed item that he/she has cast from the mould , NOT the original item (master) that the latex came from. Especially if it is a plastic ornament as they can be top heavy when cast in concrete. Most good sellers will test the mould before they sell it to make sure it is a good mould, i.e not too thick/thin or that it is possible to use with cement. Also a good seller will have some experience from casting garden ornaments themselves (thats usually how they started) and will tell you either in their listing or shop front page.
Some moulds would be too complicated to use with cement. Also bear in mind some are impossible to do without a case. i.e large ones, ones with ears or sticking out bits ( they often come out misshaped).
Also if you are just starting to make your own ornaments, start with the simpler designs. The plaques are easy.
Happy Casting!!!
