I have recently noticed a number of unscrupulous sellers offering Games Workshop Warhammer (4th Edition) Chaos Dwarf Miniatures – the ones with the tall (and some would say silly) hats for staggering prices.
If, as I am, you are collecting these wonderful Chaos Dwarf miniatures (designed and sculpted by Alan Perry and Norman Swales), or are considering collecting them, then eBay is a great place to find many of them but please take the time to read the following… it may save you a lot of financial hurt and disappointment!
Firstly all 4th Edition Chaos Dwarves are often described as "long OOP" (out of production / out of print) "rare" and "hard to find". While all models in the range are no longer in production (excluding Bloodbowl teams which are still manufactured) it is important to point out that...
MANY CHAOS DWARF MINIATURES ARE STILL AVAILABLE FROM GAMES WORKSHOP THROUGH IN-STORE MAIL ORDER OR THEIR UK ONLINE STORE!
(while their stocks last)
This means that if you have the Product Code / Part Number you can walk into any UK GW store and order the models over the counter - P&P to your local store is usually only £1 and staff will phone you when your order arrives for you to collect.
However eBay is a great place to buy these and other rare miniatures, and I have bought nearly all my Chaos Dwarf models from sellers on eBay. Having said that you might still like to review the following price information and make sure you don’t pay over the odds unnecessarily when collecting these delightful miniatures from sellers on eBay.
Of the original range, the following are no longer available from Games Workshop in the UK but come up for sale on eBay with some frequency and a few can still be found on GW online stores in other countries - the astragoth body for example is I believe still available through mail order in the US (no arms or backpack though!).
Astragoth – Chaos Dwarf Special Character with steam powered mechanical legs - rare to find it still in blister, but otherwise quite common on eBay.
Chaos Dwarf Lord on Great Taurus – often still available on eBay in shrink wrapped packaging particularly in US packaging where the range was produced slightly longer than in the UK. It is still possible to find these for around $30 USD mint in shrink, which is about £17 GBP - second hand in the UK at auction prices can vary between £15 to £35 so shop around.
Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer on Lammasu – as per the Great Taurus above but does go for less at auction from between £8 and £35 GBP, depending on how hard the bidding is.
Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer – very easy to find on eBay and you can pick this figure up for less than £5 - some of the BUY IT NOW prices I've seen at £14.99 for this model (sometimes incomplete) are in my view unrealistic and exploitative.
Chaos Dwarf Lord / Hero – There were two different Hero models one with a tall flat topped hat resting on his axe (Hero 1), another with a tall pointy hat waving his axe in the air (Hero 2). The latter is very frequently offered for sale on eBay and can be purchased for as little as £2.50, while Hero 1 is harder to find. I never paid more than £8 for one of these Hero models, so don't be seduced by the BUY IT NOW auctions for £19.99 each!
Chaos Dwarf Standard Bearers, Musicians and Leaders. Two different models for each type were produced to make up a full command group of three - The Two leaders had swords, one in a pointy hat, one in a tall hat with a spiky flat top; one musician had a drum and one musician had a horn; and two standard bearers, one with a flat topped hat, the other pointy. All figures make regular appearances on eBay either individually or as a full group. You can pick up a full command group for less than £15, so avoid the £7.99 to £19.99 BUY IT NOW price tag for an individual model. At auction these individual figures can go for much less!
The majority of Hobgoblins are out of print, but the wolfriders did come on the GW plastic wolf, so don't be fooled into paying too much more for these if the mount is included. Riders were and are (where still available) priced at between £1.50 and £2 and the wolves aren't much more new - in fact you can get 10 unused wolves with goblin riders for about £10 or £15 Buy It Now on eBay, keep the wolves and sell the goblins on if you don't need them.
I did see a unit of Hobgoblins with Axes and full command (fully painted to a basic standard) comprising of 36 models sell for about £78 GBP on ebay a year ago - thats still only about £2.10 a model and very good value! making 9 models with a BUY IT NOW price of £39.99 madness in my view.
The Bull Centaur Standard Bearer is a more saught-after miniature and will often bolster the price of a bull centaur unit when in one. Some sellers are offering the complete set of Bull Centaurs (which is seven models) for between £79.99 and £89.99 GBP BUY IT NOW. With the exception of the Standard Bearer torso and upper torso with two-handed axe, BULL CENTAURS ARE STILL AVAILABLE through GW Mail Order - all five of these models would cost you about £32.50!
DONT GET RIPPED OFF!
the standard bearer and two handed axe torso are not worth paying an extra £50 for!!!!!!!
(especially when most bull centaur units with these models at auction will reach winning bids that average £8 per model - given a little time you can collect them all for much less than £89.99)
... although Chaos Dwarfs with axes are no longer in production they are one of the most common Chaos Dwarf models available on eBay most weeks, the metal ones being much nicer in my view than the slightly larger, but still very popular plastic ones!
All of the following are still available as old stock from Games Workshop and you can get hold of them easily in store if you don't want to shop online and they are…

All the above listed items can be found in the Games Workshop UK online store website by typing in "chaos AND dwarf" in the search box.
The golden rule is 'by all means bid what you are happy to pay for the rare items no longer available, but if you're paying more than £6.50 per model for a Chaos Dwarf Bull Centaur or £2 per model for a blunderbuss or sneaky git (when unpainted, or in need of a repaint) then you are paying over the odds'.
...There are no production issues with Chaos Dwarf and Hobgoblin Bloodbowl teams and booster packs all of which are readily available from the manufacturer retailing at between £12 and £25 GBP. Chaos Dwarf and Hobgoblin players retail for around £2.50 each and the Bull Centaur Star Player is about £8 new. They are not rare and not hard to find!

edit: 10/09/06 interesting to note that this guide received its first negative vote yesterday... from a seller dealing in Chaos Dwarfs, who sent me a nice abusive email telling me exactly what he thought of me and this guide! :o)
