Many people think that cat collars are simply another fashion accessory or adornment for pets, and while there are some stunning cat collars around, that’s not their primary function! Nor are they a modern invention or ‘fad’, in fact, paintings found in Egypt from thousands of years ago show cats wearing collars.
So, why do people put collars on their cats?
* To scare off smaller animals such as birds or mice that your cat might hunt
* Often owners will attach a tag with the owners address or phone number in
case the cat gets lost.
* To let other people (such as neighbours) know that the cat isn’t a stray
when they see it wandering through their garden.
* And of course, because they’re pretty!
Tips:
* In most cases, one
collar size fits all adult cats. However kittens may need a smaller size.
Outdoor cats should only wear 'safety'
collars.
* When you put a collar on your cat, you should be able to comfortably fit two
fingers between the cats neck and the collar, so that if the collar gets stuck
on something, the cat will be able to wriggle free.
* Put a collar on your kitten as soon are you get it, even if it’s not
going to be allowed outside for a while. This will allow the kitten to get used
to it early on.
* If you have a more outgoing breed, such as a Siamese, then it is possible
to get them to walk on a lead. However, it is very important that you do not
pull the cat around or attempt to get them to do anything they’re not
happy with.
Possible features of cat collars:
* Elastic: this allows the cat to get free if it is caught on something, such
as a branch or a fence. This is vital if you allow your cat outside. Click

* Bell: this alerts other animals, especially those that your cat might be hunting,
of your cats presence. This is incredibly useful if you don’t want your
cat bringing any offerings into your house. To begin with the cat might find
it annoying, but it will soon get used to it.
* A tag with the owner’s name and phone number or address. Often people
will put the pet’s name on the tag too; however, a disadvantage of this
is that if the pet is stolen the thief will know the name that the cat answers
to.
