A UK Tax Disc is a circular document, displayed on all road vehicles, to prove payment of the tax for the use a public highway in the United Kingdom. The display of Tax Discs on vehicles in the United Kingdom all started back in 1921 and has continued in various versions ever since.
For something that is mandatory, I have always been amazed at the lack of thought by motor car and motor cycle manufacturers and motor dealers into the method of holding the road tax disc. It seems most motorist are happy enough to make do with a very cheap looking plastic tax disc holder. And more surprising still is that they are happy to accept the advertising of the dealers name on the tax disc holder!
For those who want something more professional looking, there are plenty of choices available - this guide will try to cover some of the best options..
Tax Disc Holders held on windscreen with sticky pads
Within this broad category there are many different types of tax disc holder
Alloy tax disc holders
There are a number of variations of alloy tax disc holder, mainly centred around the mechanism for removing the back of the holder to gain access to the tax disc.
- Bolted on back
This version has 5 allen key bolts to hold on the back - it requires an allen key spanner to remove the back. This type is fine when first purchased and the tax disc can be installed pruor to fizing it on the windscreen. the problem with thi design becomes apparent 6 or 12 months later - when your road tax must be renewed. the first problem is that you usually cannot find the allen key spanner!
Luckily tax disc spares kits including a spare allen key are available for little as £2.99 from car accessory shops such as ourselves at Auto Regalia:-
the second problem only is trying to unscrew the very small allen bolts while reaching upside down on the angled windscreen! usually at least one of the bolts usually drops down the back of your dashboard, never to be found again! once again the spares kit comes to the rescue with a spare screw. you will find the biggest problem occurs when you come to replace the back with the nex tax dis in place - try holding the tax disc in the correct place while screwing in the 5 tiny bolts. all done at angle which means it wants to drop off all the time! I found it easier Tax Disc Holders held on windscreen by suction Tax Disc Holders held on windscreen by the material they are manfactured with Tax Disc Holders bolted to bodywork
