FACT: You can't legally buy a 'British Title' but you can complete a Change of Title Deed
There are eBay sellers who claim that they 'sell' "Scottish Highland Estates" - from their bedrooms. This is simply - LAUGHABLY - dishonest and untrue. The most imfamous of these, operating brazenly from his 2 bedroom high-rise flat in Glasgow, has become quite notorious in internet fake title circles and a Google of "Laird" and "Scam" will give you the low down on the scammer behind this seedy con.
So, if you buy a 'Lairdship' from a con man, you will NOT be able to call yourself a 'Lord'. You will NOT be able to have your passport, driving licence or bank details changed simply because you happen to have a worthless bit of paper, made up by a semi-literate con man, printed on a cheap laser printer and signed on behalf of a company that has a 'Proposal to Strike Off' filed at Companies House. What is very likely to happen is that your Bank Manager will wet himself laughing and you will be the butt of office jokes for the rest of the year.
If you look for Laird Title and the word 'Scam' on the internet, it states:
“...meaningless" according to the Lord Lyon in Scotland. That is because a Laird Title is...well, meaningless. It is worthless. Rubbish. A Waste of Money . Always was. Always will be. The nearest thing to such a purchase is Toilet paper, which actually serves more purpose.
The sale of worthless Scottish land s is quite legal. However, only if it is made clear that it is going to be resold over and over again to thousands of other hapless victims of the same scam. The purportedly 'off-shore' con man, however, claims that he REALLY does sell different plots (well, really bogus anyway) and the really legal (well, really bogus AND childish) "You can call yourself a Laird, honestly, guv'nor" is a a dishonest scam.
The fact is, that some sellers of fake 'Laird' titles - that are not legally required to be registered anywhere - are just raking in your money to subsidise the upkeep of the mortgage on the council flat they operate a crack and prostitution den from in a Glasgow high-rise - where they actually live. They may claim to be based in Guernsey (at an accomadation address wherte they have registered an off-shore company to avoid paying UK tax) but when they brazenly seek further monies from you to 'plant a tree in the Estate' it's the equivalent of you asking the public to pay for you to plant various garden plants for your own garden. What a CHEEK!!.
The fact that the ONLY way (other than receiving an honour from Her Majesty The Queen) is to use a Change of Title Deed is upsetting to some con-artists, who love to sell worthless plots of land, which is frankly a shabby con trick which beggars belief.
Check it out for yourself and search the name of the purported seller of the 'plot of land' you were thinking of buying and the word 'scam' and see what comes up. Better still, telephone your local Trading Standards or Citizens Advice bureau - or Local Police Station. Ask them if they have ever heard of everybody who owns the freehold to their property in Scotland being known as 'Lord' something or other, and tell them you were thinking of parting with your hard earned cash to buy one on eBay so you could 'become a Laird'. Just get ready for them to laugh!!!
