Hi all this is well worth a read for anyone who has children or carrys children under 12 years of age in their car.
Seatbelt legislation is changing in respect of childrens use of childs seat, booster seats and adult seat belts.
Adults there is no change you still have to wear your belt and its still a £30 fine if youre caught without it.
The new legislation states that children under 3 must use a child restraint system appropriate for their weight in all vehilcles with the single exception being in the rear of a taxi.
For all other children under 12 years or 135 centimetres tall they must have an appropriate booster or car seat if not you as the driver will be held reponsible.
In addition the law also now says that a rear facing car seat cannot be put in a front seat unless the airbag is deactivated.
If you are still confussed there is more advice on the think website.
One loop hole i have found in the new law already is that if it is an emergency then you can carry a child without a booster or car seat.
The courts would decide what is an emrgency but an example is
A child is outside school and the parent has not arrived to take them home.
If you took them home on the parent/relative/friends behalf and the only other option was for the child to be left there alone then this would be an emergency.
HOWEVER it seems to be far easier and safer to just have a car or booster seat.
