This guide offers an overview of the Del Prado Relive Waterloo partwork that was released in the UK in the past few years. It lists the issues in order detailing the booklets, figure packs and additional items that were offered. It will be of interest to existing collectors looking to fill gaps in their collections, to new collectors who may have missed the partwork first time around, to military history enthusiasts seeking bite size chunks of information offered in the booklets and to wargamers interested in picking up the figures to recreate Waterloo on their tabletops. Relive Waterloo followed on from Del Prado's successful release of several 70mm toy soldier partworks, namely Men-at-War, Napoleon-at-War, Cavalry of the Napoleonic Wars and Medieval Warriors. In each issue you got a 16 page or so booklet from respected military history publishers Osprey together with a high quality figure. Relive Waterloo was similar in that the Osprey booklet aspect of the offer was maintained but this time the figures were 28mm painted metal figures suited to wargaming as well as collecting if desired.

Over the course of the 125 issue partwork collectors were able to build up French, Anglo-Allied and Prussian forces. Infantry, cavalry, artillery and command figures were all present to give a balanced force. It is worth mentioning that as with their 70m figures Del Prado did not stint on the quality and generally the 28mm soldiers were of a high standard and good value. In addition to the figures a 12 piece "map" of the Waterloo battlefield was also included in various earlier issues as the series progressed - Del Prado's idea being that collectors could form their own diorama on this map. More laterly model Hougoumont pieces were also included in higher number releases, together with a localised two part diorama "map".

The Relive Waterloo booklets were all numbered and it is this numbering that I have followed in my listing below. The subtitle to the booklets was Great Battles of the Napoleonic Wars so collectors got a lot of information on the period, not just covering Waterloo. The pieces that accompanied each booklet usually came in quantities of 2, 3 or 4 normally spanning different nationalities or service arms or both. Many sets were repeated as the partwork progressed enabling units of similar posed figures to be created which most collectors and wargamers would wish to see.

Subscribers could either pick up their copies in local newsagents like WH Smith or have it mailed to their homes. As is common with partworks some issues are now more highly sort after than others and hence the prices they attract on eBay are correspondingly varied. The Diorama booklet issued early on is particularly useful as it covers What is a Diorama? What Happened at Waterloo? Which Units are Represented in the Del Prado Diorama of Waterloo? and How to Create Your Diorama. Crucially it also lists all the figurines released sorted into their army units with code numbers and names given.

Finally on a related note I believe that Del Prado also issued at least a couple of other partworks offering more 28mm painted metal soldiers. One covered Austerlitz and came with Osprey booklets in French and the other was on D-Day but I do not know if this was perservered with beyond the initial issues.

WORK IN PROGRESS - There are still some gaps to be filled, especially with linking figure packs to booklets. I will complete this in due course.
