Choosing a chandelier will make or break a room.  Taking the time to choose the right one for your taste, budget and size of room is important.....it may even add value to your home!   So I thought I should share a few of the tips and ideas I've collected throuigh the years whilst buying and selling vintage lighting.

When choosing a chandelier for your dining room, proportions are very important.  You don't want the chandelier to dominate the table or look insignificant, so a few simple rules apply.

  • Measure the width & length of your table (diameter of a round table).  The width of the chandelier should be 12" shorter than the table's width (or diameter).

  • For the average 8 foot ceiling, the chandelier should be aligned with the center of the table with a 30 to 33" gap between the tabletop and bottom of the chandelier (to prevent bumped heads!!).

  • If your ceilings are higher than 8 foot add 3" above the tabletop for each foot of ceiling height.

  • Avoid high wattage bulbs.  They will increase the heat and will cause excessive glare.  You could try adding shades or a dimmer switch to create a different ambience.

  • If the electric point is not directly over the table top, secure a heavy duty decorative hook on the ceiling above the table centre and attach a length of chain to carry the wiring from the electric point.

  • Always consult a qualified electrician if in doubt.
