Many people come to our shop and ask for help in stopping their neighbors barking dogs from making so much noise or help with dogs which are not their own.
If they are your own animals which are barking excessively then this is a relatively simple problem to solve, but when these canine hooligans are not your own barking dogs, that’s when the problems can arise.
The first thing we always suggest is for you to have a quiet and polite conversation with your neighbor about their dog or dogs, if you are friends so much the better. Explain how their barking dogs are affecting your quality of life. Be specific, give dates and times of when their canine friend barks and when it is most distressing, like at night. Go and see them while the dog is barking or as soon as possible after it last barked, so if it barked during the night, see them the next morning.
Take time to understand their situation, they may have just got some new dog’s and didn’t realize their pets barks were so loud and was causing you a problem. Or they could be elderly and partially deaf and can’t hear their dogs bark.
If they say they don’t know how to stop their barking-dogs then you can suggest they search the internet for anti-bark devices or bark control collars. You may be a little proactive and print off some details for them in advance and explain that dog’s respond well to these type of anti barking devices.
Example of a Bark Control Collar
They could respond and say they can’t afford it, you could point out that local authorities impose heavy fines on owners with nuisance barkingdogs or (depending on how much you want to stop this problem) you could offer to contribute towards the cost!
However, it never ceases to amaze us at how many inconsiderate dog owners there are and we frequently hear of people whose pets bark excessively and they do not care or refuse to do anything their barking-dogs.
If this is your situation then the following dog barking tips may be of help:
The first one is for you to look into owning an ultrasonic anti bark unit and see if it would be any good for your particular situation, i.e. will it work on your neighbors pets? Ultrasonic units create a bark free zone. These will only work if the offending animals are outside when it barks because ultrasonic sound will not pass through solid objects like walls and fences. Also the dog has to be within 20 feet (7 meters) of the unit and in direct line of sight for it to be effective. Be sure to read the manual and follow all instructions.
Example of an Ultrasonic Unit
Always buy a branded model because we have found that not only are the units more effective, you get better support, a more informative guide and the seller often helps with any troubleshooting.
If this is not an option then our next tip is for you to contact your local authority or local council. In the UK the local authorities take noise pollution and barking in particular, very seriously and can impose heavy fines on the offending dog owner.
We understand that approaching an owner of a dog and asking them to stop it from barking can be stressful. Remember that for many, if they knew how to stop their dog from barking they would have probably done it by now.
When you approach them, you need to explain your situation and how you are suffering. If you help them to understand what you are going through and what your needs are, they are more likely to be sympathetic towards you.
Your objective is to try and agree to work together to resolve the problem. Like we said it is very easy to stop a dog barking, if it is your own dog, all you have to do is fit them with a static shock bark control collar. So your ultimate objective is to get them to use a bark control collar on their dog.
Good luck.
