What is RAM Memory and how can it make my computer run faster?
Your computers RAM memory is the “working” memory of the computer, as opposed to the hard drive, which is the “storage” memory. Upgrading your computer’s RAM should speed up processing times and allow you to use more advanced applications/games etc. It is the easiest and cheapest way to improve the performance of an existing machine. (note – Computers using Windows VISTA can also have their performance increased by using a “Ready Boost” USB flash drive.)
How to choose your DDR or DDR2 RAM :
* DDR and DDR2 are different types of ram. DDR is an older version than DDR2. Most new computers have ddr2 memory.
* Within that ram class are different speeds in MHz. Each motherboard in a laptop or desktop computer runs on a specific speed and will only work correctly with that speed. You can either:
a) Look at the RAM you have installed currently, there should be a sticker on it with a speed in MHZ that is what you will require.
Or
Look up the motherboard or model of computer on the manufacturer’s website or within the user manual provided and it should tell you what speed and class you require.
Each motherboard will also have a maximum amount of RAM that can be used. Some older motherboards may accept 1GB but in 2 x 512MB sticks.

What are the RAM classes?
DDR Memory: 266Mhz (PC2100), 333Mhz (PC2700) and 400Mhz (PC3200)
DDR2 Memory: 533Mhz (PC4200), 667Mhz (PC5300) and 800Mhz (PC6400)
* Desktop PCs and Laptop computers also take different types of RAM, these are easily identifiable by the following:
Desktop PC - DIMM
Laptop – SODIMM
How do i install my RAM?
To change or install sticks of RAM, there are two small clips at either end that must be gently opened to remove, a new stick should then push in easily and re-clip each end. You should not need to use much pressure, if it feels like you are, take it out and try it again, it is most probably not aligned quite correctly.
**IMPORTANT - RAM memory is very fragile and particularly sensitive to static electricity. Please make sure that you earth yourself before touching it and only hold the sticks of RAM by the edge of the board – never touch the chips or circuit board as this can cause serious damage. If anti-static equipment (mat and wrist-band) are available, these should be used whenever possible**
