Excess airline baggage charges guide Wizzair, Easyjet : eBay Guides

You'll find some great bargains getting to Bulgarias airports and Romania right now, but all is not as it looks, airlines have wildly different checked baggage limits, and some are flexible with overweight baggage, whilst others appear to be taking advantage, read this guide!

Excess Baggage, a way of making up for the cheap (Almost loss making) prices that airlines sell their tickets at. Coming home for the Christmas season I took Aer Lingus from Sofia then Ryanair from Dublin to Glasgow Prestwick, although my bag was only very slightly overweight (British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and most of the other airways have never charged me before extra unless I was REALLY over the limit) I was charged 30EUR at Dublin and I think 30 EUR at Sofia too.

Travellers, be very careful with these airlines, if you really want to go down the cheap route, make sure you have NO reason to be charged extra, these are stealth charges, charges that those who have travelled with other airlines before dont expect, so when they get to the airport and get whacked for a slightly overweight bag they are gobsmacked at being taken advantage of.

-Aerlingus's allowance is 20 KG
-British Airways allowance is 23 KG
-Ryanair checked baggage allowance is 15KG (Thats right, they get a golden whack from a load of unsuspecting passengers!)
-Wizzair allow 20KG, although I  have been over this and not been charged extra.
- Bulgaria Air's limit is 20KG, i have been on with 25KG with no excess a couple of times.
- KLM Royal Dutch have a limit of 20KG. Note that on KLMs website, they state that the "weight concept" is 20KG whilst the max is 23KG.
- Easyjet has a limit of 20KG with a rather nice touch, you can take an extra 10KG for sports equipment.

I suspect that Wizzair have a max of 23KG, however Ryanair (15kg) and Aerlingus's (20KG) max is stated as is period, to pretty much make sure they make a huge amount of cash from the passeners before even getting on the plane, when in Dublin last month there were many many bags sitting behind the check in attendants waiting for the excess tickets to be paid at the cashier before being put into the hold.

Another huge cost by Ryanair, Aerlingus, Easyjet and even Wizzair is their onboard catering charges. My personal opinion is that Wizzair, Ryanair and Aerlingus's quality of (Junk) food is exceptionally low and exceptionally (Expensively) priced, if you want to keep costs down dont only look at making sure that per person you have below the max limit for hold baggage but also take your own food and drink on board.

Note that the limits quoted are for international flights on economy, first class is usually 30KG for most airlines.

When Wizzair first started flying from Sofia, I remember them serving up Bulgarian sandwiches and the like, I cant remember paying for them!
