There are a lot of fake Laurel and Hardy cruet sets being sold on e-bay at the moment, supposedly made by Beswick. These are direct copies of the original but have been made in China, very cheaply. The fakes can be identified by the strange painting on Laurel's face, the original only had black marks along his hairline. The major give away is that the original had an impressed model number on the base of the cruet holder, but the fake does not. On the original the backstamp lettering was smaller and both said Beswick England, but the lettering on the fakes are bolder and one says Beswick and the other England. Also there should be some crazing to the glaze, but the fakes do not have this. If you want to look this up, then look in June 2008 Collect It magazine on page 24. Be careful as there are quiet a few fakes on e-bay and they are worthless.
