Fake Tempur on The Internet & eBay

Various misleading seller tricks to be aware of .

I have been asked by the readers of my other reviews to create a guide on helping how to spot fake Tempur mattresses. Fake Tempur mattresses are increasingly appearing on the internet and on eBay, I have over the past year heard reports of various misleading tricks and practices to be aware of. Here are just a few:

Non Genuine foam inside a genuine cover: You could find one of these with a seller (usually a private seller) who has just upgraded his old memory foam mattress with a genuine Tempur Mattress and has done a cover switch then listed thier old foam masquerading as a genuine tempur inside the genuine Tempur cover.

Non genuine foam inside a counterfeit cover: I am not sure where these fake covers are coming into the country from or indeed if they are coming into the country as vacuum packed & rolled complete mattresses to escape custom officials eyes? (I suspect China or a similar country with little regulation) the cover is of lower quality and have Tempur and the sleeping lady markings, to the untrained eye the cover will look like a genuine tempur, the foam is naturally non genuine tempur but a cheap chinese or imported memory foam of poor consistency and unknown density.

Non genuine cover and foam: I continually hear stories of professional sellers who have titled thier item as genuine Tempur, but sold totally non genuine foam and cover but at a cheap price (well, cheap if it was a real Tempur), the seller knowing that some people are prepared to take the risk and after thier purchase dont bother to leave reflective feedback as the product was sort of OK quality and might do the job! & hey, who wants to be left negative feedback in return by the seller when you have decided to keep the product (even if it wasn t genuine Tempur). Well forget your warrantee! as there will be none! and dont expect it to last too long either. The reality is that you could have purchased a decent quality branded memory foam mattress with a valid 15 year guarantee from a respectable seller for about the same money or even less!

How you might protect yourself

Unrealistic prices are usually a good prompter for you to make thorough enquiry before making a purchase (however some fraudsters might ask high prices making the sale look more genuine), ask for pictures of the memory foam inside the cover especially the serial numbers stamped at the footer of the memory foam and compare them with the pictures & serial number details on my Genuine Tempur Guide, also check that the inner stockinette cover is in place (if it is not then the product is more than likely not genuine).

Ask where and when this was purchased or obtained, if it is a new or used mattress (be extra cautious of claimed overseas import or re-covered due to damage claims and even ex demo claims.  If the mattress is new ask if it is boxed in a tempur box and has the box seal been broken, also ask if the seller is shipping the mattress flat (genuine Tempur mattresses are not rolled & vacuum packed this could damage them) also ask if the Tempur care documents and extended warrantee registration form is included.

If you are buying from a company then they will most certainly be VAT registered as you dont need too many sales to surpass the VAT registration threshold, the seller should also be registered with ebay as a business seller, protect yourself and only deal with a VAT & Business registered seller who are transparent in thier business details and give a land line telephone number that actually has someone at the end of it during business hours.

Always check carefully the sellers eBay feedback for problems encountered by others and be sure that the seller is not hiding behind an ebay identity with only a mobile phone (as they can permanently block your call if they get fed up with you calling) beware of low feedback & new sellers as they can exit ebay as quickly as they entered creating new identities to cheat you  the next time around. check the ebayers feedback for a long history of selling memory foam products and try to buy only from those who specialise in memory foam, lastly pay for your item via Paypal or via Credit card, helping to protect you in the event of a purchase problem.

Tempur do not sell used returns or rejects (or thier foam) to traders, dealers, manufaturers or the general public under any circumstances (call them and ask yourself). If in the past or currently you have been sold a fake tempur on eBay or anywhere else for that matter, then it is your duty to report to report this to eBay and paypal also Trading Standards as soon as you are able! EBay are not Tempur experts and have no way of verifying if a listing is genuine or not therefore they can unknowingly accept listings from fraudsters who sell fake items untill they have been reported. Imagine! if the person before you had made a report or left reflective feedback then you wouldn t purchase from this fraudster would you? Lets make eBay a safe for genuine buyers & genuine sellers!.

Please be careful when considering alternative products as many do not come up to the mark.

It is easy to buy a cheap Tempur style mattress on ebay no matter how much you pay for it!!! The art surely is to buy a quality Tempur style mattress at a cheap price, what are the odds of that happening??? (please check our feedback to find the answer).
