Whether you are new to crafting or an experienced crafter, chances are you will come across a term that you have not heard before!
Here is our glossary that we hope will answer any 'what does it mean' crafting questions you might have....

(and who are we? - we are EZeePZeeShopping )

A

Accordion Fold - A book or card made by folding paper/card so that the folds alternate creating a 'z' effect.

Acetate - Clear plastic sheet used in a variety of techniques such as stained glass windows and shaker cards. (printer and photocopy transparencies are also used in these techniques as they are readily available..)

Acid-Free - Papers that are free of acid at the time of their manufacture and have a pH between 7 and 9. Being acid-free prevents deterioration of papers and photos that will be stored for lengthy periods of time.

Acid Migration - The transfer of acid from an acidic material to a less acidic or neutral material. Can occur when acid-free items are exposed to acidic adhesives, papers, art supplies, inks, memorabilia etc....  This is why it is crucial that every element used in scrapbooking be acid-free!!

Acrylic - A water soluble paint made from pigments and a plastic binder.

Acrylic Block - A clear mounting block which can be used as an alternative to a wood block or as a mount for unmounted stamps. Crafters enjoy this alternative as you can actually see through the block to ensure correct stamp placement!

Kinwashi - a translucent, machine-made paper that is smooth on one side and textured on the other with straw like fibres.

Kozo - The most common fibre used in Japanese paper-making, it comes from the Mulberry tree and is a long, tough fibre that produces strong, absorbent sheets.

Kromecoat - a brand of double-coated glossy card. (stampers will either need specialist inks or to emboss pigment inks when working with this surface!)

Nap - Slight surface texture to a writing surface

Nib - The writing tip of a pen or quill

O

Oil Pastels - An oil based colouring product shaped like a crayon - used for both background and detail elements.

Opaque - A surface which cannot be seen through; it does not transmit light rays. Opposite of Transparent (see 'T')

Over Stamping - The process of stamping where the second stamped image overlaps slightly or completely the first stamped image. Commonly used for backgrounds and collages where no 'gap' is wanted in the stamping.

Ox-gall Liquid - Extender added sparingly to mixed paint to improve it's fluidity (or flow)

P

Paper Crimper
Paper Edger
Paper Punches

Parchment
- Animal skins or linings stretched and prepared as a writing or painting surface. It is an expensive but preferred working surface for many calligraphers because of it's smooth working surface.

pH - A measure of the concentration of alkalinity or acidity in paper. The scale runs from 1pH to 14pH with 7pH being neutral, 1pH highly acid and 14pH highly alkaline.

Pigment Ink
-

Ply
- A layer of paper (as in 2-ply = 2 layers and so on..)

Polymer Clay
- A malleable clay that can be hardened with baking and is used in several crafts including jewellery making.

Polymer Medium

Pumice/Pounce -
A fine powder used to remove grease from paper or vellum (in Calligraphy.)

Postoid - Faux postage stamp often created with art stamps and collage techniques. Not meant to be used in place of regular postage stamps - this is an art form that can be collectible.

PVA
- Polyvinylacetate, an archival white glue that is stronger than gel medium.Remains transparent even after many coats and also water soluble. Can be made water resistant by mixing with gel.

Q

Quilt Binding - A strip of fabric sewn on all edges of the quilt to cover to cover the raw edges of the quilt top, back and batting.

T

Tempera - Coloured pigment with more than one binder making the paint opaque. Tempera is water soluble even after drying (this is also true of Gouache.)

Template - A pattern of a designated shape used for repeated reproduction of that shape. Can be made from plastic, thin metal or can be as simple as a pattern on tracing paper.

Tint - Made by adding white to any opaque colour.

Tone - The shade gradations from white to black or from light to dark.

Tooth - Very slight surface texture of paper.

Translucent - Between transparent and opaque - you can see through a translucent item but not with clarity.

Transparent - can be seen through, or, technically, fully allows light rays to be transmitted to objects on the other side.

U

Unmounted - A rubber die without a foam, acrylic or wood block attached. These images can be bought individually, as pre-cut sets or as sheets which are then trimmed into individual dies by the purchaser. Several mounting systems are available for use with unmounted dies - perhaps the most popular is clear acrylic blocks (explained above...)

Unryu - An ornamental, machine-made, acid-free paper. Most commonly used in collage work, it is fibrous and lightweight but very strong.

Upper Case - Capital Letters (or sometimes referred to as Majuscule)

UTEE - Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel - An embossing powder made from larger granules of powder than regular embossing powder. These larger granules give a glaze like effect when heated with the heat tool. A glass like effect can be achieved by melting several layers over each other.

V

Valley - This is the fold in the cardstock that points down creating a 'v' like a valley.

Vellum - Translucent paper available in plain or patterned designs. Initially found popularity in the creation of wedding stationery but is now used more widely. If using with adhesive be sure to get specific vellum adhesive as most standard adhesive will show through this delicate paper.

Vulcanizer - The machine used to create rubber dies - both heat and pressure are applied to mould the rubber into an image.

W

Walnut Ink - Ink made from crystals derived from walnut shells - very versatile, water soluble colouring agent.
