For centuries gemstones were associated with different times of the year.
In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers - Jewelers of America (JA) had published an official list of gemstones associated with months – birthstones. This list is similar to the birthstones list officially accepted by the British National Association of Goldsmiths (N.A.G.) in 1937.
The official Birthstones list by Jewelers of America:
January - Garnet
February - Amethyst
March - Aquamarine
April - Diamond
May - Emerald
July - Ruby
August - Peridot
September - Sapphire
October - Opal, Tourmaline
November - Yellow Topaz, Citrine
December - Turquoise, Blue Topaz, Tanzanite
