Gizmos, Gadgets, Gimmicks  and the rest….. ..

I, like any golfer would love to be able to improve certain areas of my game, and just when you think you’ve ‘cracked it’…. something goes wrong and it all falls apart.

Often it’s down to something simple like lack of concentration, tiredness or you might try and give it that little bit extra to impress your mates by out-driving them or by hitting that perfect shot to the pin and leaving yourself with little more than a short tap-in to hopefully get a birdie….. while they’re not even on the green.  And then it all falls apart in front of our eyes - You walk off with a double boggy!!!!

But we never like to blame ourselves.  Somehow even in our own heads we’ve got to find something to blame as if to justify why it didn’t finish or do what we wanted it to do. Its called pride!

To inspire us with false confidence and to sure up our pride and self-esteem, there are loads of gizmos, gadgets and a whole array of other things that are supposed to help us overcome some of the mysteries and frustrations of the game, and get one over on your mates so you’re the one left with a tap-in.

Some are even legal to use in competitions.

These things to ‘help’ you, come in all shapes, sizes and ideas.  Hairy tees that look like some kind of throw back to the 70’s era of punk-rock hair styles, gadgets to balance your balls as they might fall over, miraculous pendants which give rare powers (watch out superman), to complete sets of clubs with weights set all over them so that they look more like a ‘Meccano’ construction an eight year old made rather than a golf club. The list goes on and on.

Why?

Well that’s simple.  Its our own arrogant belief again and it’s best mate, the fearsome monster called pride, that tell us we're not to blame, and we don’t need to practice like we should as we already have the perfect swing, which we can repeat it time and time again etc, so we need this bit of ‘kit’ to fix it.  Well we don’t have the perfect swing and a gadget will rarely fix the problem.

Obviously there may be some credence behind some of these claims, which I am sure sellers and manufactures alike, will be able to provide you with the facts ‘they’ have found, and information about their web pages where people might quote how such a thing has improved their game.

But let us not forget that the reason why these things are for sale is so that they can take your money, regardless of whether the gadget works for you, or not as often seems to be the story.  Once you’ve handed your money over it’s your problem not theirs if it doesn’t work.  But I for one would not buy a hairy tee for a fiver, or spend sixty to seventy pounds on a moulded bit of plastic with a bit of copper wire in called Q-something or other, to test it….. .

Gadgets and gizmos, call them what you want, may sometimes help you, but the best aid you can give yourself is practice.  I have never yet have heard a pro say, or write about some gimmicky thing that has helped them win a major – They all say one thing……. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

So save your money and spend it on some good equipment (the most expensive is not always the best for you), and your other-half (the most expensive of those is not always the best for you either),  Avoid the -Gizmos, Gadgets etc, and practice as the pro’s preach – you will get better and with it you’ll feel better and more confident about your game…….

Have a good Game.
