Hello everyone, i,m the old git who still likes to drive !! Over the years i have been lucky enough to own what i consider to be tasty motors, sadly
a divorce ,and a complete career change has made progress on that front a little slow,i now own, a 16v mkiii, its not the prettiest Golf, nor is it the fastest, but its been the most reliable car i have owned for many a year, and contrary to the die hards of this world ,it really is a great secondhand buy,and if you want to know ,in a straight line its faster than my mk1 1800,mk2 8v,and mk2 16v,they were all completely standard,no it does,nt handle as well, but then again how many of us have the skill to take any car on a public road and drive safely at the limit, wet or dry, what most of us want is a car that is fun,yet also,is reliable.ok ,sermon over,i think all Golfs are brilliant, but all of them have their weak points,MK 1,s are fragile,if you drive up and down smooth roads fine ,but use one everyday on country roads things start to rattle, and heaven forbid you have an accident, they crumple very easily.MK 2,s were a step up in solidity,i loved mine, again,so reliable,MK3,s did lose some of the driver involvement, build quality compared to MK1,s is light years a head,it feels solid ,my MK1 never felt solid!! So what about MK4/5 i hear you ask, well i,ve not owned either,it would be silly to comment on them, except to say,my ex wife owns a MK4 T.D.I.150,which she loves. It does,nt matter what Golf you go for, they have breeding ,reputation, and of course German engineering, forget the French,Japanese equivalents, they don,t even come close.
