Fresh Basil leaf can be rubbed on insect bites this will reduce itching and inflammation. Basil leaves can also be taken as a warming uplifting tonic for nervous exhaustion in rabbits or any cold condition. The juice from the plant, with an equal quantity of honey ,can be used for ringworm and itchy skin. An infusion (tea) of Basil combined with Wood Betony can be given immediately after birthing to prevent a retained placenta or afterbirth. Comfrey is also recommended for rabbits as a digestive aid, it also helps with wool block In extreme doses, comfrey can cause diarrehea and if left unnoticed, the rabbit may dehydrate.
Dandelions are one of the most nutritious food for rabbits as they are rich in protien. The digestibility percentage is high at an estimated 70%. The Dandelion is well known for it's curative powers. The bitter milky sap stimulates the working of all glands, including the milk glands of lactating does. The plant has both laxative and astringent qualities and regulates constipation and diarrhea.
This herb is also good for preventing osteoporosis in the old bunny, bladder infections, lactating, liver problems, swelling, tonsilitis, warts, and pneumonia.
Lavender is a multi-purpose herb which lifts anxiety . It has a direct effect upon the uterus of a doe and helps to expel, as well as being a diuretic. A late birthing doe will benefit from a little Lavender . The flowers are actually a mild tranquilizer, acting upon the heart in easing blood pressure. Lavender is good for a stressed rabbit.
When Inhaled or ingested, Lavender treats respiratory conditions. Orally, it relieves nausea, prevents flatulence, alleviates cramping, improves digestion and clears urinary tract infections. Applied to the skin and coat during grooming, it helps repel insects and treats sores , fungal infections, ringworm, lice, scabies and sores.
Majoram is a diuretic, which opens obstructions of the liver and spleen, Majoram is good for colic pain and for disorders of the head and helps settle the nerves.
Mint is used for colds and inflammation. It is a liver stimulant, and used to relax the muscles of the digestive tract and stimulate bile flow. It also reduces milk flow. Cautions are to avoid prolonged use, it can irritate the mucous membranes. Do not give any form of mint to young or baby rabbits.
Plantain is a relaxing expectorant. The leaves soothe urinary tract infections and Plantain is good for gastric inflammations also. Juice pressed from fresh leaves is given orally for inflamed mucous membranes in cystitis, diarrhea and lung infections, also for inflamations, sores, and wounds.
Sage Herb Reduces lactation when weaning, it is also a digestive stimulant and a uterine stimulant, therefore this herb should be used with caution and should be avoided during pregnancy.
The stems and leaves of Thyme are ideal for deep-seated chest infections . They are also a useful digestive remedy, combating chills and the associated diarrhea. Thyme helps to expels worms. Use with caution with does as this herb is a uterine stimulant.
