How to use printed cake toppers.
Picture or photo Icing cake toppers are becoming very popular now as it is an easy way to make a cake look really professional, the picture or photo is printed onto a thin sheet of Icing, not to be confused with rice paper. It is printed with edible inks.
When you receive your topper it will be packed in a resealable plastic bag and a board backed envelope you should store your topper in these until you are ready to use it, you can keep the topper for up to 12 months.
Have your home made or shop bought iced cake ready, this can be royal icing, fondant icing, butter icing or sugarpaste, the only unsuitable base for the topper is fresh cream.
Remove the topper from its envelope and bag and place in the freezer for one/two minutes remove from the freezer and IMMEDIATELY remove from the backing sheet and place face up on the cake (while waiting for topper to freeze if the icing on your cake has dried dampen the surface of the cake lightly with water before placing the topper) Smooth out from the centre and hey presto you have a professional looking cake which everyone will envy.
Fairy cake toppers are becoming more and more popular now and I have found that a better way to use these is to cut up the sheet into 12 squares (1 Topper to each square) lay flat on a tray or similar and place in the freezer. Take the fairy cake toppers one at a time from the freezer and immediately remove from the backing and place on the cake.
This works better than placing the complete sheet in the freezer as by the time you have done one or two cakes the toppers have gone soft again and they have to be replaced in the freezer.
A DIFFERENT WAY TO REMOVE TOPPERS FROM THE BACKING SHEET
A few people have had difficulty with the freezer method I dont know why but there it is.
AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD IS TO PUT THE TOPPER IN A WARM OVEN FOR 5 MINUTES OR SO MAKING SURE THE OVEN IS ON THE LOWEST SETTING, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR OVEN UNATTENDED WHILST THE TOPPER IS IN. REMOVE FROM THE OVEN AND PULL THE BACKING SHEET DOWN OVER THE EDGE OF A TABLE OR WORKTOP THE TOPPER SHOULD COME AWAY FROM THE BACKING SHEET EASILY, IF IT DOES'NT RETURN IT TO THE OVEN FOR A FEW MINUTES MORE.
