If you have a cast iron stove, investing in a stove thermometer is a very worthwhile thing to do. By burning at the correct temperature, this will help get the best heatout put from your stove and lengthen the lifespan. It also substantially reduces fuel consumption.

Stove thermometers tend to be small magnetic items that you stick on to the flue pipe, at least 12" above the top of the unit. If you have more than one appliance, it's quick and easy to remove and swap between appliances.

In a very short period of time, it's easy then to perfect burning without the use of the thermometer as you perfect the use of venting of your stove to suit the type of fuel being used.

Stove thermometers usually show three different sections for easy interpretation of your burn.

This easily indicates when :

The stove is burning too low - this causes creosote deposits in your flue which ultimately can lead to chimney fires, or condensate running down the inside of the flue.

Best operation - when stove and fuel are performing to optimum usuage and fuel efficiency.

Too hot - burning too hot is wastage of fuel, but even more importantly - burning too high can lead to cracking of a cast iron stove and certainley shorten the lifespan of the appliance.
