 Using the long-line

To start you need a weight for each end or 2 stakes if putting it out on a beach. Bait the hooks with any suitable bait - worm, squid, mackerel strip etc and it is best to cover the bait lightly with sand to stop birds getting at it.Set the line approx 1/2 HOUR AFTER low water and return about 11/2 hours BEFORE the next low tide.
If using from a boat you will need 2 weights,2 buoy lines and 2 flags. The size of the weights will depend on local tides etc but about 28lb(12kilo) is usually enough.Small anchors or grapnels can also be used.Tie the flag/buoy to the buoy line, tie the other end of the buoy line to 1 weight/anchor and then tie one end of the longline to the weight/anchor.Bait the hooks and lower them slowly over the side - after the last hook tie the other weight/anchor to the longline, tie one end of the other buoy line to the weight /anchor and lower the weight/anchor  and tie the other flag to the remaining end of the buoy line.If you are fishing over a clean bottom a buoy line on 1 end is sufficient but if fishing over rocks or snaggy ground 2 lines are better as you can pull from either end if a hook catches in.Slipper limpet, mussels cockles, hermit crab, peeler crab, worms also make good baits but the more "local" a bait is the more effective it will be.
It is advisable to check with your local Sea Fisheries Officer on local regulations and byelaws before fishing.

GOOD FISHING !!!
