Here are my Top 4 books for needlework and embroidery beginners...

  1. The Encyclopaedia of Embroidery Techniques, by Pauline Brown. Published by Search Press in 2001. This book covers tips on surface embroidery, needlepoint, counted embroidery, metal thread embroidery, machine embroidery, appliqué, quilting and much more. They also show you how to prepare your work, what tools you will need, along with basic stitches and techniques and a gallery of artist’s work.
  2. Pocket Encyclopaedia: Needlecraft by contributing editor Judy Britain. Published by Dorling Kindersley 1989. This book covers embroidery, needlework, patchwork/quilting, appliqué, knitting, crochet, basic sewing, dressmaking and household sewing. Each topic is covers tools, techniques and easy illustrated, how-to-do's.
  3. Anchor Complete Embroidery Course, by Christina Marsh. Published by Anchor 1998. This is a great book for learning simple stitches and techniques, as well as covering essential equipment and materials.
  4. The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff. Published by Krause Publications 1996. A great buy for the machinist! It covers guides to gathering, ruffles, godets, pleating, smocking, tucking, cording, quilting, stuffing, darts and much more.
