I have sold 1000's of items over ebay and other websites
Only Paypal has been the main culprit for reversing transactions and sending funds back to the buyer after the transaction
Buyers can be crafty and can somehow reverse the payment of a transaction -weeks AFTER the item has been sent (with proof)
I recieved a notice that a buyers payment (£56) was on a 'temporary hold' as they may be 'fraudulent'. I informed the buyer who 'claimed' to know nothing about it and said that he cant log in to paypal
A week later he said he had not recieved the item and threatened negative feedback if I did not resend
How did I know he was lying?? Because the item had been signed for!
The next day Paypal reversed the transaction completely - so not only did he get items for free, his money was refunded by Paypal who also refused to acknowledge the signature on the order - showing just how much sellers are really 'protected'.
From 2007 I have experienced several other chargebacks from buyers, mostly done several months after the transaction. Keep a record of all your losses as this goes against your end of year tax for declaration. I have reported chargebacks to my ebay account manager and my bank. I recommend using a Lloyds business account as your protected from fraudulent chargebacks to some degree because they keep track of irregular transactions and put a block on the account if something suspicious occurs
Paypal sadly helps fraudulent buyers - because they always decide in the buyers favour, plus temporary holds are done INTENTIONALLY BY THE BUYERS because they initiate chargebacks to there account
My advice to all sellers - beware of this and report it to ebay, do not under any circumstances send buyers items or refunds via cheque/cash etc if the funds are on temporary hold - you risk losing double because paypal will send the funds back to the buyer eventually
Try and use recorded delivery so that you have a signature that shows the date and time of a delivery confirmation, this proves that the chargeback is done after the signature making a buyers Paypal claim illegal but the address and signature must match the buyers name.If a buyer leaves a negative because of this - unfortunately there isn't much you can do other then reply to the comment on your feedback page and request a feedback revision (type in feedback revision request form into Ebays help tool and you can access the form)
Then report them to the bank and/or police for initiating fraudulent chargebacks using all documentation including details of the chargeback, paypal emails, date, time and also the recorded delivery signature. If you didn't use recorded delivery...submit a royal mail loss claim and once royal mail write back to you with confirmation of whether the claim is successful or not, it gets confirmed whether the official conclusion is a delivery - this can be used as evidence aswell
It sucks that some people can be so dishonest - Paypal included
Best thing to do is be an honest seller and don't allow yourself to be scammed - regardless and keep all documentation and bring it to the attention of the police, you can get a crime number and eventually (in one case we had) your money back
