Most of the world’s top scientists now agree that the world’s climate is increasingly being warmed by a rise in CO2 emissions and finally world leaders are acting on this. Since the beginning of Industrialisation some 200 years ago man’s activities have accelerated the pollution of the earth’s atmosphere with greenhouse gases, accelerating global warming with potential dramatic results.

The 1990’s were the warmest decade since records began and in August 2003 temperatures here in Kent reached a record breaking 100° F (38.5° C).

Initially it may seem that these man-made climate changes improve our lives, giving us hot summers and shorter warmer winters. However as we have also been seeing recently it leads to more extreme weather events like mini tornados and flash flooding. If carbon emissions are not reduced we can expect to see a rise in sea level, retreating glaciers, increased tropical storms, continued reduction of Arctic Sea ice and more heavy 3 day rainfall events in the Northern hemisphere.

All this will lead to great changes in our food production and the world’s forests. Global warming will put ecosystems under great stress leading to a reduction in the biodiversity of the planet. Coasts and low lying areas will be susceptible to flooding and some communities will be inundated. The health of the nation will be compromised by increased viruses, tropical illness and other illnesses carried by flying insects, the heat affecting the very young and old alike. Industry, settlements and society will be affected by more frequent extreme weather events and shortages of climate sensitive resources like food and water.

Global warming could also cause the Gulf Stream to move away from our island’s shores which would have a further dramatic destabilising effect on the British climate.

Bleak isn't it? Our generation and those before us have much to answer for and it is an awful legacy for our children & grandchildren to deal with. There is still time to start turning things around and work together with the natural world. Each of us must take responsibility to reduce our own personal carbon footprint using the technology available today. If we lead the way, others will surely follow. Once the ball is rolling, the ingenuity of the human race together with the healing power of nature itself will help us work in harmony with our planet again.
