When cleaning a record I  personally find that record cleaning solutions are very good.Normally in conjunction with this,people use all sorts of cloths,paper towels,'toilet rolls' and a whole host of other products to wipe the records.In my experience COTTON WOOL  is the best item for cleaning them with,as it is very fine and does not scratch the surface....hope this helps someone.
