Screen whine on Palm handhelds

Screen whine is a problem the affects many Palm devices, producing a high pitched whining noise, whenever the device is switched on. Most people cannot hear it, but for those with sensitive ears, it can be a real problem. The official response from Palm is that this is normal behaviour, and not something that they can fix.

Screen whine seems to happen on all of their units with a TFT screen, except for the Palm T|X. The odd unit will exhibit no annoying screen whine because Palm uses different brands of screens on the same units. They use Sharp and Sony screens - the Sharp ones whine, but the Sony ones do not.

If you are suffering from screen whine, the recommended solution is to use a program called WarpSpeed by PalmPowerUps, which can be downloaded from their web site. This has a specific setting to kill screen whine. Its use for overclocking is more controversial.
