Sky Digital Fault Finding and Troubleshooting

The table below gives the probable causes to most main Sky faults. If the action is to try a full reset then do the following –

Make sure the receiver is connected to a dish aligned at the Sky satellite

Switch off your receiver at the mains

Press and hold the backup button on the front of the receiver

Switch the receiver on at the mains

Once all lights have illuminated on the front of the Digibox, release the backup button

If your box is connected via Scart cable you will receive a message on the screen

Once the reset has finished, the box will revert to standby.

Fault

Receiver won’t power on. No lights on at all.

Possible Causes

PSU or Main processor failure.

Action

Can be repaired by some specialist companies. Although it will probably cost around £75-90, probably better buying a new box.

Receiver stuck in standby

Possible Causes

Probable PSU failure or possible software problem try a full reset.

Action

Try a full reset; if this doesn’t work then it’s probably a PSU fault.

Some Sky channels missing

Possible Causes

This can be a number of reasons –

Software fault – try this first

Ask a friend if you can connect your receiver to their dish, if it works ok then it’s probably your LNB. If it still has the same problem then it’s probably a faulty receiver.

Action

Software fault – perform system reset

Faulty LNB – this is the bit that is on the end of the dish. If this is the case contact a local independent (click here) they will probably charge around £35 to fix this.

Faulty box – Beyond economical repair

Error with viewing card

Possible Causes

Check to see what software version is currently loaded on the box by pressing services then 4 then 5. It needs to be 3.1.5 or above.

Action

If the software version is less than 3.4.4b then do a full reset. Once the reset is done check the software version again. It sometimes requires 3 or 4 resets before the latest software version is downloaded.

Fault

Receiver not recognising viewing card

Possible Causes

Check to see what software version is currently loaded on the box by pressing services then 4 then 5. It needs to be 3.4.4b or above.

Action

If the software version is less than 3.4.4b then do a full reset. Once the reset is done check the software version again. It sometimes requires 3 or 4 resets before the latest software version is downloaded.

Fault

Some channels break up into squares

Possible Causes

This is probably a signal problem.

Action

Contact a local independent they will be able to realign your dish and check signal levels. Expect to pay about £35.

Fault

Sky + won’t record

Possible Causes

Probably a software fault, possibly an LNB fault.

Action

Perform a full reset, if that doesn’t solve it try another reset, it can take up to 4 resets to cure the problem. If it still isn’t recording swap the LNB inputs around and make sure you have signal on both inputs.

Possible Causes

Action

You will need to do up to 4 full resets to cure the problems. This is due to the new software allowing simultaneous recording of 2 channels.

Sky + Hard Disk Problems

Corrupt Data

Action

In the services menu go to housekeeping and do a full reset, this will delete any recorded programmes, even if they are market as keep.

Sky + RF2 output distorted

Possible Causes

Hardware fault

Action

This has become a common problem on the new Sky + (PVR2) contact the retailer and report the problem. You box will need to go back to Pace for repair.
