INTRODUCTION
If you are like me and have been trying to quit smoking on no less than 100 occasions, and I have finally taken control of my craving. I wrote this guide shortly after I was involved in a couple of RTAs and realised I was suddenly on 20+ a day (from 3-7 a day), in hope that it would help any other smokers out there who want to quit for all the right reasons, but enjoy it too much (like me).

It's all very well using those patches but they're not really practical when they cost 4 times as much as smoking and still supply nicotine to your system. The only way to quit any bad habit properly is cold turkey style. None of this *cutting down* rubbish, because I've been there and we both know its a lie! Cold turkey is inevitably a shock to the system for some, but I have quit in the past cold turkey (before stupidly starting again) and after the first week I felt like a new man! Didn't even feel the craving. The first week though was hell, especially on nights out.

REASONS TO QUIT
Here are a few reasons to quit to get you motivated. Now us smokers, we all hate people telling us why it is bad to smoke don't we, "because it kills you" oh really does it? Yeah yeah we know and we don't care! I've heard of people who have smoked for 50 years 10-20 a day and are still live & kicking (ish) at 70, however the statistics of deaths from cigerettes are quite shocking. I prefer not to look at them!

Apart from the long term affects that everyone's aware of, here's a reminder of the more immediate and realistic reasons to consider quitting.....

  1. Bad breath, bad taste, yellow teeth & acceletated aging of the skin
  2. The musty after-stentch on your clothes that makes you and others feel sick
  3. Sore lungs and the inevitabiliy of coughing up all that crap in the mornings
  4. The inability to catch your breath as well as you used to, with generally a lot less energy too
  5. Calculate the cost of your own smoking in a year, then think about what else you could spend that on
  6. The feeling of going to sleep all the time with sore eyes and the willing not to get out of bed in the morning
  7. A sense of self-achievement that everyone will give you credit for if you stop smoking
  8. Constant dehydration.
  9. Nicotine is a laxative as well as a depressant, your bowels will be under stress to retain food and kidneys working overdrive to filter out the toxin.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO WHEN QUITTING COLD TURKEY

  1. Have your last fag at night. This will give you a fresh start in the morning and the pending effort to get a new packet. As long as you still have them at your reach you WILL smoke them.
  2. Brush your teeth, have a shower/long soaking bath, and wash your hair etc to relieve yourself of the smoking tindge. This will refresh you and discourage you to re-tindge yourself with the taste and stink.
  3. Next you WILL be expected to lose your rag at some point at pointless things, as the calming nicotine is now AWOL in your blood, the brain is feeling anxiety. Get a stress ball or if you have a punchbag, use it regularly. If you're less macsuline, go to the gym, have a drive (but safely!) or have a jog to work off that excess stress. Use aggressive computer games at your perral.
  4. Fighting the craving... you have to distract yourself physically. Get involved in something that involves hand-eye coodination and a bit of aggression like a sport or video game. Don't watch TV because your hands will be feeling bored and the itching for a fag starts. You will find yourself eating more - this is a good thing as your appetite will come back and your taste re-instated.
  5. Fighting the craving on a night out..... this is the real challenge and if you can conquer this you've conquered one of the hardest non-smoking challenges of them all. Theres not much you can do with this one, its mostly a test of will-power. It's down to you to disapline yourself, maybe before going cold turkey only take out 4 cigerettes with you to last you the night until you feel strong enough not to smoke at all. The temptation will get harder the more you drink, so remember it'll make you feel twice as worse in the morning with the dry throat and enhanced-hangover if you do smoke. You will also feel tired throughout the night and unwilling to engage in the nights activities, so combat this with a red bull and perhaps a music request to the DJ.
  6. Sex drive heightens... no need to explain this one.

Thats all I have to give really, so good luck! You will feel better in no time! Remember! Will power!! Don't deny yourself.
