TV TORNADO. City. 1  14th Jan 1967-88 14th Sep 1968 (joins TV 21)

A surprisingly short-lived title given the high, culty television content. Designed as a companion piece to TV Century 21. The original Mysterons strip that begins with #36 is a highlight. The free gift Bat-Parachute with issue #1 is extremely rare and would add £150+ to the value. The predominantly white cover makes it very difficult to find a true Near Mint or even genuinely high grade copy. Issues to watch out for are #7 (Green Hornet begins), #15 (The Saint begins), #36 (The Mysterons begin), #37 (1st Tornado & Solo, free gift), #48 (Patrick McGoohan Prisoner cover), #58 (free gift Boomerang), #59 (Patrick Troughton Dr. Who cover - very sought after). A copy of #2 in "excellent condition" and no free gift sold for £21 (E Bay Nov 2007). A #1 from the same collection sold for £62, again in "excellent"condition". The free gift Magic Cards from issue #2 sold on E Bay for £94 (Dec 2007).

An unusual title only for its quirky television content though aimed at much younger viewers. The free gift in issue #1 is stand-up Pinky and Perky figures....well, I've never seen them....

Very collectible title though hard to put a run together in my experience. Lots of good quality cult TV strips make this a must have. Issues do turn up on E Bay but not long runs sadly. Grab a run if you see one, it's a great read. The free gift in issue #1 Soccer Star Portraits adds maybe £30-£40 to the value. The date on the front cover of #1 and #2 is blanked out from the previous week as there was a delay in launching after the isues were printed so it's not a rare printing error or anything like that. The first few issues seem quite common whereas later issues are harder to get.

2000AD. IPC/Fleetway. 1 26th Feb 1977-present (#1566 as at Dec 2007)

Still going strong after 30 years and the only comic left from the halcyon days of the 1970's, apart from Dandy and Beano. A training ground for some of Britain's best artists and writers like Dave Gibbons and Brian Bolland, Alan Moore and Pat Mills. Lots printed, lots survive though pure white pages are scarcer. Overwhelming majority of issue #1's have some sort of mark on the cover left by the sellotape fixing the free gift Space Spinner. Or if it's still attached, the sellotape is usually dark and stainy. Recent E-Bay sale (Dec 2007) of #1 in VG with no free gift £62. With free gift adds about £30-£50 to the value though this gift is very common. Near Mint means near flawless with white pages, nothing less than that. A much better free gift is in issue #2, the first appearance of Judge Dredd. The free gift is a sheet of Bionic Stickers and these are hard to find unused. Adds maybe £60-£80 to the value. The free gift Red Survival Wallet in #3 is more common and not a very exciting gift!

A remarkably long-lived and much under-rated title. Along the way it swallowed up TV Fan, Serenade, Roxy and Marilyn before finally succumbing to be swallowed up itself by Mirabelle. E Bay has helped to bring copies out of the woodwork so grab and enjoy!

One of the best titles of the 1960s in my opinion for consistent quality of story and character. Loved all those Is It True cover features! The free gift for issue #1 League Ladders and Pocket Rocket together add about £125-£150 on the value. League Ladders alone more common though still hard to find add about £75-£80 value). Only ever seen one true Near Mint copy of issue #1.

Note: owing to paper shortages/strikes, there were no issued published from 21st Nov 1970 to 30th Jan 1971 inclusive. Also there were no issues dated 19th an 1974, 2nd to 16th Feb 1974, 6th through to the 27th Jul 1974. So if you think you had spaces in your collection on those dates, suddenly your Valiant run is more complete than you think! Very annoying/confusing these missing ones for those just starting their collection.

Free Gifts
Free gifts in Valiant turn up on Ebay, mostly the Soccer Album from 1971 - very common. Surprisingly the League Ladders and Team Tabs show up too. The Giant Book of World War Two is fairly common. The Identikit pops up once or twice a year. The rest of the gifts are very scarce to rare to non-existent.

VALIANT ANNUAL. Fleetway. 1964-1984
Copies of Valiant annual turn up on E Bay all the time, even early ones, even copies of the first one are quite common. It amuses me to see listings like "Valiant Annual 1975. Very rare!" No. Don't think so. What is are are true Near Mint copies of the first two or three annuals with no written dedications, perfect laminate covering, bright white pages, no prices clipped out and a spine so tight that you can't open the annual all the way out. Now that is what I call rare. Most annuals across the board that turn up on E Bay are VG or less.
