The new SCAM that is being tried on ebay

This is just a heads up for all Ebay members

there is a new scam going on they have tried it on me twice in the last few days.

you receive a email from a ebay member (i will paste the email below) saying that they have recently seen an item just like the one you are selling, with a link to the item when you click on the link you are asked to sign in (i keep my computer permanatly signed in so i don't need to keep signing in) at that point alarm bells rang.

if you read Ebays advice on these types of email they tell you that if it doesn't appear in your messages then it is probably a fake, because this email comes from an Ebay member it appears in my messages, it comes through the Ebay system so for all intense and purposes it is a genuine email. Ebay policy

i reported this to Ebay twice but they either do not seem interested or do not understand (i will paste there reply below as well), they keep going on about second chance offers and not buying items outside Ebay (i'm the seller) they seem to be more worried about losing out on fees, than my security on Ebay.

my advice to any one reading this is if a Ebay member sends you a question that requires you to follow a link and then "sign in" think twice about this try entering the link through you normal Ebay screen and do not give out sensative information, once thay have your passwords they have all your information from Ebay your address, full name any credit cards you have listed and probably more importantly your good Ebay name which these SCAMMERS can then use to try to get other Ebay members to give out there details.

remember this was from an actual Ebay member

Hello,
My name is Luella Bunten.

I just saw this item of yours and I remember seeing the same item two days ago, take a look:

(then there was a link, i have removed it for safetys sake)

this was Ebays reply

Thank you for sending us the email you received. It does not appear to
be a spoof email, but is an email from another eBay member.

The anonymous email forwarding function on eBay enables members to
communicate with each other while remaining protecting their email
address. Unfortunately, sometimes this function is also used to send
unwanted emails. Although these are not spoof emails, such emails may
contain links to suspicious websites, where you are asked to divulge
personal details or login information.

Unsolicited emails often invite you to buy or sell an item outside the
security of the eBay platform. In this case, we advise you to delete the
email and not respond to further emails from that sender. Remember that
transactions completed outside of the eBay website are not covered by
our Feedback system or buyer protection programmes.

Use My eBay to check queries and offers from other members and always
complete your purchases and sales on the eBay website.

  Recognising genuine Second Chance Offers

A Second Chance Offer always receives a new item number and is shown in
My eBay. To accept a genuine Second Chance Offer you must log in to your
account and complete the purchase on the eBay website. If you can't find
the offer in the Buying section of My eBay, it's not valid.

If you want more information about the Second Chance Offer, look for the
original item you bid on under "Didn't Win" in My eBay and use the link
on the item page to ask the seller a question.

To learn more about Second Chance Offers, please copy the following link

Protect yourself from email scams and fraud

Always make sure that your User ID is listed as the winning bidder on
the "Item ended" page before sending money for a purchase. Please report
anyone who asks you to buy outside eBay to Customer Support.

eBay policies on unwanted emails (spam)

We don't permit users to send "spam" emails--emails which are not wanted
or expressly permitted by the recipient and we will take appropriate
action against members who send spam. For more information on our policy
please copy the following link into a new browser window:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/rfe-spam-ov.html

Here's how to report an unwanted email from another eBay member:

1. Click "Contact Us" on the left-hand side of any eBay Help page.
Choose the following options depending on the type of unwanted email and
click "Continue":
- Account Security > Problems with other eBay members > Seller offered
to sell item outside eBay
- Account Security > Unwanted or inappropriate email > User sent you
unwanted, commercial email (spam)
2. Click on the link to email Customer Support. You may be asked to sign
in.
3. Complete all fields in the email form. It's important to send us the
complete header of the spam email or we won't be able to investigate.

  Reducing unwanted (spam) emails

Make sure you take advantage of the junk email filters in your email
program to eliminate unwanted emails from your inbox. You may want to
consider adding the sender of the email you reported to your "blocked"
list. For more tips, copy the following link into a new browser window:

  Protect yourself from spoof websites

The free eBay Toolbar with Account Guard helps you protect yourself
against entering confidential data on suspicious websites. For more
information and to download the eBay Toolbar, copy the following link
into a new browser window:
