Tord Boontje Garland light shade by Habitat / Artecnica : eBay Guides

This is a really unusual light shade which might need some explanation.

Tord Boontje is an award winning designer who mainly works with silhouettes of leaves and animals, designs inspired by nature.The garland shade is probably his most successful commercial project. It is created by laser cutting a thin sheet of metal into the shapes of leaves, flowers and petals which then form a flat sheet. This sheet has a central stem from which all the shapes are connected and it is this stem which forms the structure of the shade. Available in various colours including brass/gold, bronze/black, copper and steel/silver. Manufactured by Habitat and Artecnica.

Installation instructions

After cutting away the shade from its supports, you directly attach it to the light fitting. On a pendant light you attach the clip to the wire just above the fixing which holds the bulb in place and then spiral the shade around the fitting and the bulb. The petals and leaves then catch onto each other and form the shade. Be very careful when you do this- take your time. If you have a spare set of hands then ask them to hold the extra length of garland while you wrap it around the shade.

The best results are achieved by combining a few shades which then cover the fitting and bulb and you get a full shade which glints and diffuses the light beautifully.

Postage

Because this shade comes as a sheet of A2 metal it is actually too large for the United Kingdom's postal service to deliver worldwide. This means it needs to be folded in half by sellers but it doesn't affect the use of the shade. I wouldn't recommend buying 'used' garlands which have already been formed around a bulb- it is nearly impossible to untangle them and is not worth the hassle.
