Piedfort's are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they are closely assocaited with France, where from the twelth century they were appranetly issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
In Britain the practise of striking Piedfort coins is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are know.
In recent years Mints from around the worlds make Piedfort coins for collectors.
