So what does make anyone buy a painting - what do you think?

Here are a few pointed questions to help you determine what you really think . . .

  • Are you okay about buying art without having seen it ‘in the flesh’? Are you confident enough in the ebay process to go ahead and treat yourself to something you really fancy - without worrying?

  • Have you bought paintings online before - especially on eBay? How was your experience? If good, has this made you confident to buy again? And if bad, has this put you off buying again – or will you allow for the possibility of a much better transaction in future?
  • What do you buy? Do you buy original art? Maybe oil paintings or acrylics? Or do you prefer watercolours or gauche, pastel, pen and ink work, pencil drawings, or mixed media?
  • Do you prefer to buy from artists or from dealers, (or don’t you mind)? You buy from home or abroad? Are you careful about whom you buy from, or do you just go for it when you like picture?
  • What attracts you to picture the first place - is it the colour? Or is it maybe, the mood of the painting? Or the subject? Or something else?
  • Do you prefer certain media for the work - such as oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolour or mixed media, or is it more about the picture itself for you?

  • Would you buy a painting purely on the name of an artist, or would you have to really like a piece to purchase it? And if you’re not a named-artist collector, are you still possibly influenced by how many bids a piece has on it, and are thus influenced into thinking it must be worth getting? Further, are you perhaps hesitant because no-one else is bidding?
  • Do you like a painting to represent something, or are you attracted to pure abstract expressions? And if you prefer representational painting, are you okay with something looser, or do you like tighter work, maybe even photo-realist?
  • What about the size of the painting, does that matter? And do you buy paintings only to put on your walls or do you collect unframed pictures, maybe in drawers? (This is how the Chinese have always traditionally kept their art)
  • Do you treat yourself only, or do you buy gifts for people - for your family or friends? Or maybe you buy pictures to resell, perhaps to local galleries in your area, or maybe in your own gallery, on your website or in your own eBay shop?
  • Does it matter to you if a picture is framed or not? Have you got a local framer, who can do a good job for you at a reasonable price? Or would you rather buy your picture ready framed and pay the extra, including the extra carriage (shipping)?
  • What do you think about artists selling pictures on eBay? Do you like the idea of getting pictures (often much) cheaper than you would pay for similar things in galleries? Are you looking for genuine artists, or is it possible you don't mind the factory production idea, especially when the work is cheap? (There are hundreds of thousands of paintings done in factories every year – some of them really good too!)
  • Are you interested in buying something that will gain in value, or do you buy a piece just because you like it? And how important is a Guarantee of Satisfaction to you - so you can feel safe to return something if you just don't like it 'in the flesh'?
  •

Well, there's a few questions for you! I hope you don't think I'm being too personal about it, but it’s worth a little time to consider these matters a bit more closely. I know you probably thought this was a going to be a guide that told you important information, but actually, it turns out to be a guide into your own thoughtful responses, which in fact, is just as useful! (There are many guides here on ebay to tell you lots of things, but when it comes down to it, you eventually really need to be true to yourself.)

As an artist who has been selling work for well over 25 years now, (and for the past 9 months on e bay), I wanted to stimulate your thinking about your own ideas and conceptions regarding ebay art buying. And should you have felt hesitant to commit yourself to buying art on ebay up to now, remember to always look for the quality of the guarantee offered.

If you like my brief guide (let’s say a coaching guide into how you think about art buying at the moment), then you’ll probably want to check me out . . . at least I hope so!
