At Disc-shop-uk we often get asked what are the different types of blank DVDs that can be purchased, here is a summary:

DVD-R: A universal recordable DVD format, used by various DVDRs and DVD burners, this is only a write once format that can be used for various DVD players. The written/burned data is permanently stored and cannot be deleted.

DVD-RW: Rewritable and recordable format as needed, these discs can be used in many DVD players, only if they are recorded in the straight video mode and finalized.

DVD+RW: Rewritable and recordable format as needed, this format offers a great degree of compatibility with latest DVD technologies compared to DVD-RW.

DVD+R: A recently introduced format, these discs are easier to use in comparison to DVD-R and can be used in various DVD players. The data once stored cannot be erased.

DVD-RAM: Rewritable and recordable format that is not compatible with present DVD-ROM computer drives or DVD technology.

Double Layer DVD: Rewritable and recordable, this format offers double capacity of the normal DVD discs as it has two thin embedded organic dye films. Only dual layered DVD burners are compatible for these discs. Make sure you always check with the features offered by the DVD burner manufacturer for necessary details and the upgrades that are available for burning Dual Layer media.

Printable DVD: A rewritable and recordable format medium that allows easy printing of label designs directly after recording of the data. One can create custom-printed high-quality, screen print designs with thermal media or inkjet and thermal printers
