Wireless Door Bell Guide

Just where do you start with these wireless door bells as can be seen here on eBay the selection is huge. With so many variations just what should you be looking for. Well I hope some of the points I make below help you to make the right decision.

Where to buy from  ok sounds silly I know but what I mean here is just have a look at the ebay listings for these items and you will see a large amount of overseas sellers who are normally the cheapest to buy from, well it would appear that way in most cases by the time you add up the postage costs possible import duties and V.A.T is it really worth it. There are problems to look out for :-

  • Plug in type door chimes from overseas are often fitted with the European  two pin plug rather than the U.K three pin plug this means plugging in an adaptor to your socket then the chime into the adaptor this results in the chime being loose in the adaptor and often causes intermittent operation. So ensure the item is to the U.K standard.
  • The item develops a problem or just does not work at all when you get it, what know return to the seller well you will find in most cases the buyer is responsible for return postage costs these will often be in excess of what you paid for the item in the first place so you end up disposing of the item and buying another form a U.K seller who offers a warranty.

What Type Of Door Bell Do You Require two types available.

Plug In Type

The plug in type of door bell is very convenient however they are more expensive and do you have a socket available where you want to position the chime. Another point is you have a socket where you want to position the chime but you have something else plugged into the point you cannot fit an adaptor to plug the two items into that point the chimes are just to large. You can get around this by purchasing a system where the chime has a pass through socket so you plug the chime into the socket and the other item into the chime an example is below left. The picture on the right shows a typical chime plugged directly into a U.K socket.

Battery Operated

Battery operated these are great as they are cheaper to purchase and they do not use a lot of power so the batteries can last for a considerable period (hint use good quality alkaline batteries). Being battery operated they are also very portable but do check the physical size of the chime units if you do wish to move it around, the sizes of the chimes can vary hugely. Mentioning batteries make sure you know what size batteries the chimes use are they readily available. Ok so the battery operated system so far looks like a winner but as usual there is a draw back and yes its the batteries like all batteries you will have to replace them which means a higher running cost than the plug in type chime. Some examples of battry operated chimes are shown below note you cannot notice in the pictures the left hand chime unit is more than twice the size of the example on the right to give you some idea compare the size of the chime units to the bell push which is identical in both items.

Bell Push

Seems a pretty simple item the bell push but these are critical as they are the transmitter for the system so they have to be good. What to look out for in a bell push
  • Is it splash proof remember these are outside so have to be pretty resistant to the elements.
  • Size this is a good one you get various sizes and shapes some are huge, an early  system I started out selling had an absolutley huge bell push which is the reason I know no longer sell them. I do stock one bell system with a very narrow bell push this is ideal if you are restricted for room to mount the bell push.
  • Number of bell push required do you require more than one bell push for example one for the front and one for the back door. Please do check that additional bell pushes are available for any system you choose they are not always available.
Below are some typical examples of bell pushes
