I have owned my Daimler XJ40 1989 4.0 litre for nearly 4 years and cannot see a reason to change. So long as you are prepared to do some maintenance yourself, the Haynes manual and Jag Lovers internet guide are excellent references, this car can be run for a lot less than a modern car with the grace and comfort that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. If you buy for between £1,000 and £1,500 look for structural damage rather than mechanical wear as bodywork will be the only area that fails the MOT in most cases. Since buying the car and with some ability to service cars (only a hobby to me not professional) I have changed bushes, the front subframe, springs and shocks (membership of Jaguar Enthusiasts Club useful for tool hire) and taken the car from 165,000 to 225,000 miles. Keep a spare crankshaft sensor with you as this can fail with no warning but is relatively easy to fit.

In summary, comfortable, quiet, impresses the neighbours, most people who don't look too close and all passengers, 18 mpg round town up to 30 mpg on a run. Plenty around, find a good one and I'm sure you'll be very happy.
