Fake emails are common and every eBay user will have received them. However a surprising number of people do not realise they are scams and are designed to harvest your username and password.
The text in them varies but they are all designed to do the same thing and that is to take you to a false eBay website where you will be asked to enter your username and password.
An example..... Hello, Did you sell the laptop or someonehas put up a fraudulant listing? If you are still seller tell me the buy it now price. Thank you
It is very easy to protect yourself from these emails.
If the email is about an item or auction which is a mystery to you it is almost certainly a scam and all you need to do is to go to your own eBay pages and click the My Messages link. If the message appears there it is probably OK and you can answer it directly via eBay.
HOWEVER, if it takes you to a webpage, even if it looks like eBay, that asks you for your username and password IGNORE IT.
DO NOT enter your username and password.
Forward the offending email to eBay and just forget all about it. The scammer does not know you, these are always random.
